    Free cat :( **HOME FOUND**

Thought I would try here. Im desperate to find my cat a new home. As the story goes, im moving in with my partner which has an american staffy. Anyone with staffs know they arent too fond of cats and it most probably wouldnt last very long. Please take the time to read my Gumtree ad and please pass on to anyone you think would like a free cat. She is lovely and gentle and not aggressive at all.

    Cheers,
    Adam

My staffy used to love my cat- they played like little kids. My cat used to beat him up and he would take it. Never once snapped at her. It depends what you teach your dog.

I suppose. I dont know, three staffs Ive known hated cats, but were the loveliest dogs to other dogs and people, and kids, etc.. just not cats.. I just thought it was a staff thing.

Not as far as I know. Ive also lived with a pit bull and he was ok too, just had to keep a bit more of an eye out because he would get excited and a bit rough sometimes. As long as the cat could escape to somewhere high or out of his reach it was ok. Just had to be more aware of cat/ dog interaction.

The staffie used to pick up my cat and carry her around in his mouth sometimes, and she would just loll there. The first time I saw it I thought she dead, had a freaking heart attack lol.

With both dogs, the worst thing was stinky dog drool on the cat. Had to wash her sometimes- she wasn't keen on it

+1 good luck with finding her a good home but maybe try introducing them under supervision from the dogs owner with an escape route for the cat, maybe on either side of a closed glass sliding door until they get used to each other then try a screen door, if the cat is not normally aggressive and the dog is not normally aggressive they may surprise you but the first impression for either of them could stick so try not to make it something they flip out over.
Do you remember the good old days before the internet?

when arguments were only entered into by the physically or intellectually able.

+1 introduction, method? Each in a crate, slowly over an hour move them closer and closer, crates prevent either fleeing or attacking, instantly correct any aggression from either, once crates together and both calm (reward each calm moment with food), open crate doors, let each emerge in own time, monitor and correct as required, just as a guess?

Hi Guys, thanks for the suggestions. The reason im very hesitant in introducing is because:

    a) its the AMstaffs home that the cat is coming in to, they protect their home and occupants quite fiercly.

    b) when ever we go to the vet, she goes straight to this particular corner that cats USED to be kept over 6 months ago (she has to go to the vet alot with skin allergies). When they were kept there, we used to have to keep her outside until she was ready to see the vet otherwise she would go absolutely bananas at the cats in the cage. She still goes up to the table where they once were kept and just wants to get on there and smell all around it.

    c) She hears cats invade the perimeter of the house in the early hours of the morning and will bug us to wake up so she can chase them away. God help if she ever catches one.

    d) She has taken the security door off its hinges in an attempt to get to a large magpie (she also likes to show birds where to go too)

    e) Shes sometimes doesnt play well with other dogs smaller than her (she is a long legged fawn AMstaff of about 27kgs - lean but strong)

The list could go on, point is the cat is a shy, small cat that is used to a quiet household entering a chaotic AMstaffs lifestyle that dispises cats. She is a very determined and persistent dog. When she had an op on her knee a few years ago, she scratched chunks out of the wall, in an effort to get out of the laundry because she didnt want to be housed in there while she was recovering.

Unless it was bought up with it, I just can't see happy families happening..

you make it sound so easy.. how about past experiences of either animal? Have you ever kept animals before that regardless what you do or attempt to do or train, they just want to be who they are? Not having a go, but seriously, im an animal lover and have had numerous dogs over my life. Ive always attempted to train them and some respond very well, others not so much.

With having known this particular dog for over 2 years, I am 80% confident it wont work, or if it works, it will take a good 2-3 months of them getting used to each other, in which time I have to ensure that no "accidents" occur ie. one cat, landing into one dog's mouth.. it would prob only take half a lock down with her jaws to prob pop the cat's head off.

    Not all staffys hate cats

We have two cats and a black lab & they get on really well; we also look after a friends staffy occasionally and he's fine with our cats and visa versa... took a little time for them to get used to each other but enabling the cats to see the dog & have an escape area (those kiddie gates are great to block off a room) they eventually took to the staffy too.

Gorgeous cat. I think I see the solution to your problem. "Free to good home, 1 staffy".

Has she ever been with other cats?

Haha.. i love the cat but im a dog person through and through.. she has been attacked once by a larger cat that was around the area a while ago, but I used to come home and see her hanging out with a completely white cat of similar size (small). Reminded me of White Men Cant Jump lol

How do you think she would go with dogs? We have small breed dogs that have all grown up with cats. I'd like to take her, not sure if I should, already have 4 cats lol.

Might have a think about it!

I agree. It's the dog that seems, from everything you've described, as being the problem.
