From memory, the oval pistons was an idea about getting more valve area for higher gas flow without increasing the cylinder count/capacity much.
It was a bit of a "hack" to get around rules (forget whether it was capacity or cylinder count), but yeah - didn't exactly work as well as planned.
As you can probably understand, I believe the oval pistons caused all sorts of interesting issues with regards to thermal expansion, etc.

Was cylinder count...

The final 500cc race version was capable of developing approximately 130bhp at over 20,000rpm.

Not bad for a 500cc *4 stroke* ...
btw... the NR oval pistons have little to do with the VFR... not sure why they were posted up, but...

I reckon we should make the RVF the M.A.D prize this year

In peak race form. IIRC the street version had 130 odd hp. More could be unlocked with judicious application of a number of very expensive HRC components and careful reassembly. AMCN had an article of someone at the time who had one, with a fair few of those HRC bits. A guy I worked with back then had a ride on a standard one back then and said it went very well even in standard trim but the handling and brakes were sensational.

considering they are nice and rare round these parts, and they retailed for around the $90k mark when new, this isn't really a bad price at all........ if i had the money, i would lay it down in a heartbeat.......

$90k, don't think so... maybe the NR750...
the RVF750R was just under £18,000 when released in 1994, so about $38k Australian, plus a bit for importing and markup (still a seriously large price though).
NR750 was 5 million yen, or £38,000 which is between 50-80k Australian depending on which currency and which part of 1992 you look at...

I thought that the next M.A.D. prize has already been lined up?
Didn't Deej pick it up the other day?
Some funky looking and sounding red thing that took a year to get here, and is being personally donated by him?

now it depends on whether it really is an RC45 then, because i remember asking down at Causeway Honda when they were running the final year. they said retail on the RC45 was $90k-ish, and since they had one on the floor for a while, i am pretty inclined to trust them on the price......... that may or may not have included any extra HRC parts, but i am certain about the price......

Well, given the difference between (for example) US prices and what we pay for a bike here, I suppose it's not too unbelievable they would ask that price in Australia.
I saw this bike last year while snooping around causeways, couldn't believe what it was so I examined it closely, took down the VIN and it all checks out. It's a real RC45 alright, although the compliance plate says "VFR750FL"

RVF750 (i.e. RC45) was slightly more than the 916SP of the time. Nowhere near $90k. It's not a VFR750FL either - that's the regular VFR750 from 1990 I think.

That bike would be worth the money just for the noise it makes.

Just so you know - a CBX-6 is not a 600.

It was essentially an attempt at a "pseudo V8"
