just friggen hurry up and fix it Bunny bot, this saga is starting to shit me and your missing out on valuable riding time...
I think you have about 3 days before the boys come around and sit you in a chair and just fix the bloody thing.
why do you want to remove the basket?

standard "dont go at it too hard" rules apply
if you do make a mess of it, then just use abit of this when you put it all back together

well the bike is back on the road.
new clutch and all, the problem is still there, but not as much.
bike still slightly pulls when in first with the clutch in, and it is difficult to engage neutral when the bike is stationary. I can get neutral when the bike is coasting along at about 20km/h.......
other than that, all the gear changing is fine and the bike no longer clunks violently when stationary and changing from 1st to 2nd.
but for now, i dont really care, went for a ride this evening to bed in the plates.
If the problem still persists in a few hundred km, i'll start investigating again.

Do you have a lower adjusting screw?
Most bikes do... you use the lower adjustment on your clutch cable to adjust your clutch position. And you upper cable adjustment to ajust slip and grab.

did that today Robin. and it improved the ability to engage neutral.
bike still will not engage neutral while stationary. anything below a jogging pace and it wont.
saw Stephan at the LNR this thursday and he seems confident that it is the pin and bushes(sp) at the cluth lever that is worn and may only be pulling the cable at 60% ability instead of 100% (if that makes sense). the cable might be at the right tension, but the lever cannot pull to its optimum extension.
