It's live over east but not live here, as on Sunday night Rove is on HD till 9.40 whilst over east there playing F1. But it's better news then staying up till 1am for the race to start.

If only you were running Linux. The 6800 has 'PureVideo' (ie hardware mpeg decoder) and with the XvMC extension loaded in X the CPU offloads some decoding to the video card. Works well. My P4-2.4GHz HTPC does HD with a GeForce 440MX, just.
Tried booting from a Linux live CD, knoppix/kubuntu/etc?

<ntml><nerd reply>
Might be about time I have another look at the the linux side of things then. I'm aware that the 6800 has purevideo, but the last time I fuxxed with linux and tv cards, I ended up having no joy on an analogue tuner card (bt878) on this exact same setup, and the situation was supposed to be grimmer for the digital side of things, support-wise. And this is ignoring any changes to X I'd have to make that I'm realistically not capable of comprehending, assuming they go beyond the .conf.
Like I said, if I'd forked out less for one of the competitors who just put a generic chip on a generic board that worked with any one of the generic digital programs out there, I wouldn't be having these problems. You can use purevideo with any of the competing cards, I just hit the jackpot all on my own.
What's a good distro for having all the usual suspects (compilers, headers and source included), but keeping all the configuration stuff in the intended location, in text?
Ubuntu's a bit too much on the automagic side of things, though I like its rather good system sensing; installing basic gcc and source management in it isn't something I've mastered. Fedora has pissed me off way too many times with wrong headers to compile against, and I'm running a custom LFS build on my laptop. Thinking about maybe giving slackware a go...

I'm a kubuntu fan. Prior to ubuntu's existance it was Debian. Don't have much experience with the others. A (k)ubuntu live CD would be a good start IMHO. Either that or MythTV (Mythbuntu?).
XvMC shouldn't need any messing with xorg.conf, should be there out of the box. It shows up as 'XVideo Motion Compensation'. Oh, and set your video mode out to XVideo if it's not the default.
However you will need to install Nvidia's proprietary binary driver. This is easy, plenty of howto's around on that and XvMC.

Fox shows the MotoGP live for every race and WSB. What I want to know is why can they do this and it is shown on TEN later that night yet the same can't be done with F1!?

Xanthian: slackware is what you want.
Either that or FreeBSD - if there's a driver for the card in linux, chances are there's a BSD driver too. I know what you mean about "automagic" config stuff as opposed to having easily managed text files - if thats what you want, slackware is the linux to go for.
