Ok - at the risk of getting flamed to absolute buggery (and with only the text on Perth Now to go by), it seems a lot of people have jumped on the line
"The move comes despite overwhelming evidence to suggest that the quickest and most effective way to curb the road toll is by dropping speed limits, including research that showed 5500 less people would be killed or serioulsy injured if overall speed limits were reduced by 10km/h across WA." yet ignored the previous paragraph:
But the council failed to recommend lowering overall speed limits after a mixed response from the community consultation.
No point jumping up and down saying that the RSC (Road Safety council) are idiots because they are trying to lower speed limits. They didn't recommend lowering speed limits, the PerthNow journo / article did.
There is also no mention of Swedish data recommending speed limits be lowered. What it DID say was that the report was based on Swedish research. Again - remember here that the RSC report makes no mention of lowering speed limits.
Recommendations that WERE contained in the report
*To replace corporate and Government fleet vehicles with cars that have electronic stability controls, which take over control if a vehicle runs off the road, as well as intelligent speed adaptation systems, that are linked to global positioning systems, and sound an alarm for the driver when the car is travelling over the speed limit.
Agree that education would be better served here. Most cars / GPS systems have speed limit warnings anyway and new cars seem to be coming out with ESC anyway so this will eventually happen as government/corporate cars get replaced over time.
*Establish an independent WA-based road safety research centre in the next three years.
Not a bad thing - at least this will stop eveyrone saying "But that data is from fucking Sweden - why can't we use WA data"
*Safety barriers and audible roadside edge lining to prevent run-off-the-road crashes.
Cats eyes on the side of country roads ARE one way of providing an indication to tired drivers. Maybe not the bets of measures but at least a step in the right direction, specially on country roads where these are not already in place.
*Ensure that school-owned buses ensure lap and shoulder seatbelts are fitted.
Dunno about this one though. This seems to be precautionary rather than preventative, ie: "well when the bus does crash, people are wearing seat belts".
*Develop treatment options for the top 100 intersection crash sites and the top 20 per cent of run-off-the-road crash sites.
Again, not a bad thing - looking at existing black spots and fixing them.
Feel free to bag the RSC for anything that actually IS in the report, but you can't really bag them for something that someone else said.
Finally - Yeah Dorrington might be an idiot but if you are going to complain about a report, at least try and complain about something that is actually IN a report
PS: Sorry to add a rational response to a thread about the RSC
