    Radiator fin cleaning

    As the title suggests I am trying to clean the crap out from between the fins on my radiator. I have got all the soft stuff like bugs and rubber etc out by washing and compressed air but there is alot of sand/small rocks etc stuck in the gaps.
    Other than picking through each fin has anyone got any other techniques that might work?
    I have done a search but did not find anything related.

    get a cheap water pressure blaster from bunnings, they work a treat, round$100 i think, but you have it forever then!

    Pressure washing has been done but there is still a bit of grit to be moved.
    I'm dreading sitting there with a pic but it may be the only way.

    Just a thought, but are you using the pressure washer from back to front? It might help to force the grit back out the way it came.

    You used to be able to get a "radiator comb" but I wouldn't know where to even begin to find one now.

    Yeah done the back to front flush. The grit is mostly larger sand grains from the track. I got all the rubber and bugs out with the flushing and compressed air but the grit is stuck in pretty tight.

    Try soaking it for a day or two in the degreaser we got at work and hit it with the pressure cleaner again...might get rid of a bit more...

    Unfortunatley there is no other way to get the stones etc out from your fins. Time and a small pick are the way to go. I use to work for a heat exchanger company and this was the method that we used. If you try using any chemicals, then you run the risk of eating away at the metal and then making your rad leak. Also be very careful when pressure washing as it's all to easy to fold over the fins, then you have a job on your hands.

    Take your time and do it properly, if not just pick out the biggest ones and leave the smallest.

    Leave it in there and paint the radiator, it will magically disappear, or try shower power and dry it off with a sham-wow?

    My 600 has a ways to go yet, parts on order though. Might still be able to make it.

    Compressed air and a pick with the rad out --- and lots of patience.

    Rad combes are more for alloy air con heat exchangers and don't work too well at on brass IMO.

    Get yourself a radguard -- saves a lot of grief and much easier to clean.
