Book Spines Project - Book Donations for Shenton Park

Book Spines

Book Spines Project

Last year I was in the Wellington Street & Shenton Park, Royal Perth hospitals for a total of 2 months after a spinal injury. Many patients with more severe injuries are in the Shenton Park rehabilitation hospital for weeks or months.

With this in mind I am creating a project to provide a resource of reading material immediately available onsite for patients of Shenton Park Hospital, with the possibility of expanding further to include all of Royal Perth Hospitals.

Initially I am looking at providing a bookcase(s) at Shenton Park, & filling them with donated books. Any surplus books could be given to the Friends of Royal Perth Hospital, who currently operate a book trolley.

Books in e-book & audio format would also be welcome for those whose injuries make reading hardcopy prohibitive.

Donations

To create this project I am requesting donations of:

Books, preferably paperbacks, as hardcover or coffee table sized books are more difficult to read by someone lying on their back.

E-book or audio books, or suggestions of websites available for free & legal downloads.

Bookcase(s), or possibly someone with carpentry skills willing to build one.

Additionally, any ideas or offers that could assist in this project would be welcome.

Book Collection

Books can be dropped into Ward 11 of Shenton Park Hospital.

Contacts there are Mel Kokot & Anne Watts.

Alternatively an arrangement may be made to get the books to me by contacting Nick on 0407472297 or measdayn@iinet.net.au

Hi Drach,
I've found a Shenton Park Campus map.

http://www.rph.wa.gov.au/pdf/SPC_map.pdf

It's in the Physiotherapy area, surrounded by the Physio Gym, Hydrotherapy Pool, & Occupational Therapy Blocks.

Thanks,
Nick

Hey, for those with coffee table sized book and hard covers, you could hold a book stall and sell them to purchase either more suitable books or what ever else may be needed.
Just a thought, I have a load of books to get rid of, would prefer them to go to a worthy cause. Unfortunately have already gotten rid of quite a few.

If you are talking about ward 11, its actually the (dark) yellow building labled number 16 on that map.

I'm assuming the books will be put in the patient lounge - on the north east corner of building 16.

Well done for taking the initiative.... Thats how we got the MAD computer room created...

Hi xphread,
Yes, in the patient lounge, the one with the entrance coming from the outdoor area that has a small dolphin fountain.

I've spoken to a couple of staff there who've measured up the space available for a bookcase there.
I'll need to sort out obtaining a bookcase (102cm high x 270cm long) or 2 x
(102cm high by 130cm long).
