Help needed

Hi all, i need some help, i have a small problem with my newly aquired RS 250
the problem is with my kick starter moving backwards when i accelerate, i dont know why its doing it or if its a big job to fix. it also moves itself forwards and hits on the clutch cover all the time. If someone can help me with this issue that would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like it's not disengaging properly. It's a fiddly job to pull apart but not overly hard, buy yourself a workshop manual. You will appreciate a second set of hands too.

Even when i adjust the kick started back to where its supposed to be, you can push it forward to the wrong spot, like something is broken inside. Stuffed if i know. Oh yeah i forgot to mention once you stop accelerating hard it slowly moves back to the resting position, back up against the clutch cover.

theres a spring in there that loops over a bolt, can be a pain in the arse if it comes loose. If it's anything like the RGV kick start (which I assume it is) then Desmo and I had a prick of a time getting it on barfridges RGV. You will probably want someone to help you get the spring/gears to line up as you slide the cover back on

So im guessing its just the clutch cover that has to come off? Im a mechanic by trade but i dont have access to a second set of hands as my house mate (also a mechainc) is on a different roster to me.

Stratos is right, RGVLee is the man in the know. He probably has a manual too, fire him a PM and see if he's got an electronic copy for you. He's a nice guy so probably won't bite you for asking

So it doesn't spring back into place? Are the splines on the kick starter shaft worn? Are you sure it's the kick start mechanism or just a worn kick start lever? The aprilia kick start levers are rubbish.

If it is the kick start mechanism, it sounds like the return spring may be broken or not installed correctly.

If it is, you'll need to open her up which will require a new clutch cover gasket, kick start oil seal and some light gear oil to fill the gearbox up again. May also have to drop the coolant as well to get the right amount of leverage to get the clutch cover off.

Not a hard job to do. Couple of beers and a few hours should work out what is going on.

Its strange because it springs back into place but then a little further forward from where it was first positioned before i kick it over. the splines are good on the kickstarter and the shaft. then when you accelerate hard from the lights or anyother time it rolls back then slowly brings itsself forwards to the resting position. Its got me stufed why it wants to keep moving forwards all the time. and there is a heap of free play there now when there wasnt before.

I'll bet any $$$'s that your return spring hasn't been correctly fitted.

yep... or the bolt that holds the spring in place has come off and the spring has come loose. it will still sort of work as the spring will lock in against the dowel in there but will move around when not under load.

Quick interim fix (workaround, until you can be bothered to fix, anyway):

Take the kick starter off and push start.

The RGV motor will push start using first gear clutch drop and a walking pace "run up" of about 4-5 feet

Funny you suggest that as i was thinking of doing that myself but then i though, that would look pretty fucked up push starting a bike at shopping centre or sumthin.

I used to do that all the time with my rz, kick start worked fine, just sometimes it was easier to sit on bike, duck walk two steps and drop the clutch and you're off. How lazy is that!
