Moving interstate - need advice

It is possible that I may be moving over to Brisbane at the end of the year, and was wondering if anyone has had to move interstate and might therefore have some advice for me as to the best way to do it.

Basically, everything I need to bring I could fit in a big van (tho the more room the better, I'll be living over there for at least 4 years if this goes down), and the way I see it my options are:
-Hire a van and drive it myself (I have no idea how much this would cost)
-Hire/buy a trailer and pull it over in my crappy old volvo (which would probably break down on the nullabor)
-Freight my crap across and fly over

I'm not sure if it would be cheaper to hire the van or pay the freight. The good thing about driving across is I would have a car when I got there, tho I think I would need to give it a major service before I left.

I would appreciate any advice or ballpark cost figures. Thanks in advance.

One way van/truck hire is usually pretty to very expensive as the rental companies genrally don't like you doing it. Frieght east is reasonably cheap if you can get it back loaded as a lot of trucks bring stuff here but are not neascarily loaded for the trip back. Depending on how much crap you have might be worth selling the cheaper bulky items and buy others when you get there. The car if its a bunger like you suggest may burn more fuel than its worth driving there might be consider !@#$ing it off and getting something else over there depending on how long you decide to stay.

About 3 years ago a friend of mine used Wridgeways to mover her entire home contents + car from Perth to Mackay for ~$2000. That included them packing everything up at this end. Presumably they left it all boxed at the other end tho.

Thanks guys. $2k seems pretty good, and I would have a lot less stuff to move over, tho it is probably a bit more now with diesel prices what they are.
