View Full Version : This is a little creepy

It's my birthday today (no, that's not the creepy bit), and I've just noticed that Google knows this and is giving me a special birthday search page. I can't, for the life of me, remember telling Google my birthday, so I'm left with an uneasy Big Brother feeling about it.

Cue Twilight Zone music...

Happy birthday!
Maybe your Facebook profile or photography forum?

Thanks.

If that's it, it's a worry that they trawl that stuff and put it all together for the sake of a personalised search page. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, though.

Well Google-bots trawl everywhere picking up stuff, so if it's in a profile somewhere they'll probably get it
I used to notice when checking on new registrations and whacking spammer registrations on OzBB that the Google-bots were there trying to get info

Yeah, it took me a little while to come up with. I trialled it on an obscure Norwegian forum last year, and it worked well. So, after brainstorming it with a small group of select stakeholders I decided to give it a run on 'the Big One'! :)

Interesting, I've been playing around with Google Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics to make sure they are both getting right inside the online store I jest set up.

Happy Birthday!

P.S on the creepy google part, my phone knows I call my girl-friend very often, on her birthday it put a little birthday cake icon in the corner on my homescreen as a reminder, you couldn't click it or do anything with it, but it was there..

Yeah.... Willing to bet most peoples personals are very readily available. Interesting that they store this info though....

Happy birthday too. May you continue filling the funny thread for years to come.

Facebook/Youtube/Gmail??? Using any of those tells them since Google owns them (not Fb though, they just work together.)

Not only do google know it, but they've sold the info to anyone who cares. Go to ebay (or Amazon or whoever) and as soon as ebay gets any sense of who you are, you'll get ads for the kind of bikes you like, the kind of camera you use, and any number of other clues to what you search for. the only thing that protects you from all sorts of dodgy outcomes is if you're not worth targeting.

Happy Birthday, and yes they are watching you. I guess there's little point trying to convince you of paranoid delusions.
