Eh? Why's that?

Mechatonic Eng was a really interesting and "fun" degree.
But the type of industry in WA doesn't require Mechatronic Eng's to the same level as the eastern states or overseas.
As compared to the demand Mechanical or Electrical engineers here in WA.
(You don't get enough exposure to key aspects of those degree's.)

But then again, all a degree really is a bit of paper saying you've done the groundwork and have the ability to learn....
The real learning starts when you get your first job.

FYI: Most if not all the Mechanical Engineers had jobs before their final year was over.
I don't know many Mechatronic that did. (In that capacity.)
Fortunately I had done most of a Mining Eng degree and had several years experience already so I didn't have a problem getting a job.

If you're passionate about automation and robotics then go for it!
But have a look in the paper or online for mechatronic jobs and make you own call on the quantity and type of jobs available.

With this resources boom, either way you'll get a job, don't worry about that!

Best of luck!

(That said sometimes I wonder if I should have stayed on the mines in '95, and just invested in real-estate....could have retired by now.     :pinch: :( )

I've heard that since the profession is fairly new, there's not much demand for them, and most job offers don't specifically ask for mechatronic engineers, just things that mechatronic engineers can do (which is still inconvenient when you look for jobs/advertise yourself) :x

but yar, basically heard that there's no demand for mechatronic engineers.

As for mechanical, got told in some engineering speech at UWA that a common job domestically involves air-conditioners, rather than the commonly desired cars. That could have just been UWA though, and theres nothing wrong with air-cons, so meh. Good times

Hahaha, yeah. You going into engineering with the dream of working for some sort of motorsport/aviation/NASA company etc.

Then you wind up getting work with something far less exciting. *sigh*

WA's lazy tradition of dig-it-up-and-ship-it-out......then buying it back doesn't help....

lol, yes I remember being in school, wanting to design cars. Look in the stupid handbook think they give you under mechanical engineering "design and maintenance of air conditioners and plant equipment"

bugger...dont want to do that...lets do chemical engineering.

you can do automotive engineering in canberra iirc.

the school system really doesn't give people a good idea of what various jobs entail. and they wonder why so many kids have no idea what they want to do.

WA's lazy tradition of dig-it-up-and-ship-it-out......then buying it back doesn't help....[/b]

yeah, the government really needs a kick up the ass to get them to encourage more value adding industry into W.A.

it seems they only go with what they know....
anyone see the recent alternative fuels bill

Even if the govt. got the idea, who'd want the risk of underwriting the level of capital required setting up something like that anyway......sell the wrong type of meat pie in the mess, or sack a stoner and it's strikes or blue-flu running rife.
