SENSELESS hoons on pushbikes smashed a window of TV legend Bert Newton's car as his terrified wife Patti sat inside.

A shaken Mrs Newton said the attack happened moments after she pulled up outside the Regent Theatre to drop her husband off for his nightly performance in Wicked.

Their daughter Lauren, who is heavily pregnant with her second child, hopped out of the back seat just before a rock shattered the rear window.

"We pulled up at the stage door and Bert and Lauren got out of the car," Mrs Newton said.

"These two cyclists were speeding down Flinders Lane and they yelled out something to Bert, 'Hello Bertie' or something, and one threw a quartz stone through the window behind me.

"It sounded like a gunshot, because it went straight through the window and shattered the glass.

"I was just very grateful Lauren had moved because otherwise she would have been hit by the rock."

The attack is believed to have been caught on security cameras at the Regent Theatre and was witnessed by several bystanders.

Mrs Newton said she was shocked by the Friday night attack.

"They were laughing on their bikes, so obviously they thought it was a great joke," she said.

"It was really dangerous. It was very scary."

Mrs Newton, whose handbag full of valuables was snatched at Chadstone Shopping Centre last year, said she had not reported the latest attack to police.

"I guess it was a police action, but with all the drama I had with the bag I could not bear to go through anything like that again," she said.
