Sup PSB.

It's coming around to that time of year again, when the river gets high and the water starts flowing at a much quicker pace. The rains fill up the Valley, and a whole bunch of mad craftsmen gather their gear to scoot down the rapids to the finish.

All photo's courtesy of the Avon Descent Gallery 2008.

For those that are interested, the '09 Descent Kicks off on the 1st & 2nd of August. Entries close on the 9th of July. Volunteers and spectators are welcome anytime, providing you bring a cheer squad and a responsible attitude. River levels are reported to be as high as last year, and are expected to rise. Gonna be going for a quick blat to check on Bells Rapids tomorrow to confirm.

Anywho, to the real question...is anyone in PSB involved in the Avon, racing or otherwise? Does anyone want to do it or have an interest?

Your friendly neighbourhood red-head,

I'll try to do that! :) If you want to join in mate, we're a few operators short in the rescue department.

I'd put money on Toddie and Ian winning the powercraft again, though i've been out of the PDRC loop for a while now...though things rarely change on that front

^Rightfully so, sir. Cheers for the info Tato, that's gonna make things interesting down the Chute!

Just got back from Bells, the water level is higher than '08 July. So allowing for rainfall this month, levels should be higher than last. Gonna be a hoot!

Depends on where you want to place ?? Go join a club like ascott or Swan kayak clubs and get hooked up.

Bare min would be three 1-3 hour sessions a week mixing up speed and endurance work.
And then you have to pick the right boat to suit. If you have not done much paddling get as many valley runs in as possible ad try to train on the ocean if you have the right type of craft. Its not that hard but does take a little bit of "i'm not giving up for anyone". Go see Terry at canoeing down under he puts his money where is mouth is at all levels of the sport not just the top end like some of the other players out there.

The Blackwood 250 is a longer event than the Avon, just not as much white water.

If only I had a wooden barrel and some balls.

I was refering to this post. I've never heard of the Blackwood 250 is it a paddle event as well ?? I don't get into powerboats just paddling. There is a race soon from Northam to Toodyay as a pre run of the avon start. I'm pretty sure its for paddlers only but.

The Murray is not a race its just playboating. The rapids are much larger than the Avon. There is a race of sorts held on the lower Murray as part of the Murray river white water festival but its a pretty closed event due to the size of the rapids most of the guys paddle playboats or creek boats.

Nah the Blackwood Classic 250 is the longest river race of the year: a timed race from Bridgetown to Augusta. As Chance said, not much white water but it's still got one hell of a current, no paddlecraft.

Mmmm - well not being the strongest swimmer around, I'm not sure how useful I'd be. I have some experience at pulling people out of the water though having been at the right spot at the right time to rescue a capsized boat of burqa wearing women, kids and a few men in Banjarmarsin (none of whom could swim at all). The water was so festy I lost my hearing in one of my ears for nearly a week :(.

So if being a uber strong swimmer is not a criteria, let me know as I'd be keen to get involved.

I have only been involved with paddlecraft in the past, so the motor variety is all new to me.

Done many blackwoods, tho i didnt do the sunnyside the other weekend - I just cant justify going up a rapid.. that's just hooliganism.. frank berloth was organising that one..

I'd like to have all my gear in 1 piece before i get to the avon, I do enough damage as it is :)

Been ASU for many years, and done lots with the PDRC - this is the first year I've put my boat in tho.. so it's completely different when you're in the race for your self.. ( not to pull others out )

I'm finishing the trailer at the moment, and putting the last licks on the final to my painted masterpiece de sled :awesome:
( will post pics, if anyone's interested )

depends what you're chasing mate.. if you want some airborne pics.. and crashes... great place is just below the northam weir.. you can go along side the bank, near the rocks.. like this one.. always good crashes..

if you're looking for high speed passes, like the above.. go to katrines bridge..

you could make your way out to extract's - which is where the ' vinidex chute ' is - and there's always humungous spills and crashes there too... that's where most come to grief, and to be honest - I might portage around there, cos i wanna finish the race.. not spend it on the riverbank waiting for my recovery team :)

here's my sexytime, from sunday - over the northam weir...

Is it feasible to incorporate a couple of those into a ride/shoot/ride/shoot or is it all over pretty quickly? And what sort of time of day are we talking?

Eukanuba

if you wanna ride and shoot, you gotta be a ninja - it takes us about 2 mins less in car to catch the boat.. so once you snap, and the boats over - you best haul a55 to the next bridge to catch em coming through..

I'd suggest a run from northam weir on the start grid, then down to katrines.. and then bypass dumbarton bridge - aka 'dumb bastards' and go straight to extracts..

paddlers, you'll be all day there for *yawns*..

the power craft are over real fast, while we're sinkin beers and repairing boats - they've still got hours to go... :awesome:

darth lefty
27-07-2009, 03:41 PM
Mmmm... ok.

What time does it start? Are the paddlers/motorboats off at the same time? Maybe catch the motorboats at one of the bridges then get the paddlers at another/several afterwards..? Is that feasible?

Eukanuba
27-07-2009, 03:45 PM
power boats always leave first starting grid 1 leaves at 0800.. then they're 30 seconds apart..

there's 55 power boats this year, so it should take about 30 mins to launch the entire grid..

paddlers take ages, and usually come to grief in the chute.. tumbling and falling out of their boats.. it makes for some great drama watching them run over each other.. :)

Extracts is safe and fun :awesome:

Extracts Weir

Extracts Weir is considered to be the most dangerous obstacle of the river on Day 1.

Spectators must park in the designated parking areas and not on the road verges in the vicinity of the Weir.

Power craft arrive from about 8.30am, paddlers from 10.30am.

Please respect this private property.

A spectator fee applies at this vantage point.

Belltower
27-07-2009, 03:51 PM
Pfft, for powerboat's it's a piece of piss...even though Scotty and Coatsy managed to ram the pylon last year. However as Euk said, some paddlers do struggle planning routes down the chute, we were forever pulling out blokes last year. Plus the white wash gets messy and it's easy for a paddler to be trapped underneath. It all depends on water levels.

pjay, that boat from 176 might be our rig..

Are you wanting to run a motor or go up front ?

I'm seriously looking for a deckie for 2010 - have everything.. literally.. you just need a helmet, wetsuit, lifejacket ( which I have if you're an XL ), booties and gloves..

If you're upto - and around 80-90 kilo's - then i might have a ride for you..

PM me, and i'll hook up a time.. I'm planning on doing the january races, and I've been working on the boat over the last few days..

Didnt know you know Coatsy, I was his support crew a few years back when he raced with Adrian. The the bug bit me and got my own boats now.

When are you starting practise Chris? Im keen to come down to "compare notes" no fonzy

i was kinda hoping to get my own for something to do on and off the water. me and my mate were gonna alternate going deckie and skipper. We're going to be a seriously light boat, i'm only 60 myself, he's about the same. nah, going by the pic i have of it and your dp, dont think it is its flatter up on the bow. cheers for a quick, let alone a reply at all :D

I'm ready to roll, and reece and his decky ( McIver Racing ) are up for a bit of a play run.. if yanno what i mean :)

Really, my boat can go in the water right now - I've got a huge box of prop's and the boat's ready to go.. ( just for my own piece of mind, I'd like to paint it.. but it's gonna float :) )

Anytime you want mate, I'd love to put it out in the water.. and get some speed testing on the go.. ( no fonzy either )

I'd appreciate the time in the water to get my turning practice ( at speed ) refined.. and I'm gonna need a 'counter weight' to practice getting it up on the plane.. ^_^

every boat is different bro, the width too - depends on the crew..

I'm running one of the ' homer boats ' - also known as a u-cart concrete boat... it's quick, and far more than what I'm really capable of at the moment - but i'm growing into it.. aparently it's quite a short boat.. but she fair fly's :)

Line up is usually:

Jimbo, here's my new solution to the ' paddler problem ' and those pesky kayak's you all insist on leaving floating in the river..

So i've devised a way to get them to go down a bit easier..

Perhaps a little paddle modification is required, something like this maybe

Nah, the nose tends to bounce over them pretty easy.. it's just that the bits left over tend to float - even when they're full of water.. so you've gotta make smaller pieces :)

Skelly, if you can - please snap pics of us.. I'm keen to see how we look at full speed ! :)

Eukanuba
31-07-2011, 01:51 PM
plenty of spectators watching along the river jamathi..

More so on day 1, day 2 is a bit of a non event until we reach bells.. then we disappear into the tree's again.. come out on west swan road.. and then the massive straight down the river - to the finish at garrett road bridge..

that last section is a real test.. it's a flat out charge to the finish line.. and it's really tiring on the crew because you're trying to maintain race speed while keeping a good line through the river.. dodging normal river users..

I get drivers arm quite badly and numb hands.. so I am shattered when it's all finished..

How did the kayakers go?

They were awesome. I have so much admiration for those guys. We saw a three kayak pileup that looked like something escher would draw, there were a half dozen people behind us that were being led by someone who could only be described as a prize cockholster though. Y'know how at the cricket there is some guy with a belly full of piss who heckles the shit out of the opposition and while it's embarrassing and awkward to be near him it doesn't really matter because they (the players) can't hear you?

That guy was there this morning, only he was twenty feet from the action and didn't have forty thousand people drowning out his idiocy. And he was sober.

But yeah, loved the kayaks.

581452011 Peel region Canoe week 27 August-11 september 2011;
Saturday 27-8-2011; Murray Whitewater Festival!
Lower Murray river Dwellingup!
Mismanagment,
No info how to posibly participate, no info on race results nor who is who for the average spectator, no related trade shows, no decent facilities.
Bull dust OH&S signs declaring foot bridge in Bayswater park capacity of max 80 people WTH!
you could not fit 30 hungry skeletons on it!
typical local goverment waste of a great event!
Never mind the commercial sponsors are not getting involved (Very sad)
Very dissapointed for average spectator as you cannot get "Involved" nor close to the show at all!

Eukanuba

Jamathi: are we talking about the descent, or a paddling event in Dwellingup ?

Most of the details are on the avon descent website on how to get the best vantage points.. how to join, or how to compete..
If you're talking about paddling - most of the kayak shops like Finn or the kayak shops have heaps of brochures up..

Unfortunately, the Descent is only publicised in a very narrow window every year.. by the time you hear about it - most guys have been practicing for months..
This is why it's so hard to get sponsors - because people are only interested when they hear about it.. the other 11 months of the year are almost dead..

You're best to set up 12 months in advance..it'll take you that long to get race ready..

Hopefully next year I will be on our block watching everyone go past! :) (maybe even from the living room with binoculars :D)

Not sure how exciting a vantage point it will be as its on the flats - but its towards the end, so if you want you can see the contenders for the lead - then drive off to the Garrat Rd bridge to see the finish?
Might organise a PSB (WTF) BBQ for this if anyone is interested.

Will be buying some Kayaks since its a short drag to the river, and have done 3/4 of the course (over 3 days)... but don't think I'm up for the race! :D

Aww euk, just saw the footage of you guys getting hammered at emu's. Painful to watch, bet it felt worse. Hope everyone pulled up ok...... You never did catch me with that prop of yours. Better luck next yeah, eh?

Jimbo: best way to do anything.. is get back in and have another crack at it.. yeah, I'll be in again next year..

Just hope the sponsor gets the airtime.. that's what it's all about - promoting the sponsor.. look after them, and hopefully they stay onboard for another year.. :)

We've got another race next weekend in bridgetown, then there's another 5 weeks after that.. so a fail in the descent isnt a fail in our racing season..

Our main boat's almost finished patching, 2 spare boats are ready.. and I have another motor ready to go... preparation for the win :)

So, who is in training for this years event?

I've just bought a kayak, with a view to competing in 2013 rather than this year. I had heard that each kayaker needs a buddy to register, can anyone confirm or deny this?

Jimbo

Activeman - no buddy required, but you will need to demonstrate experience in marathon events (check out the canoeing wa website for the WA marathon season - enter as many of those as you can get to) & need to do a whitewater competancy course (1 day once the river levels rise & we get some white water).

A mate and i were talkin about entering the avon in a powerboat on the weekend. Yes we were a bit drunk at the time but it is something that i have thought about doing for a long time, and its on his bucket list to do the race in a kayak. There isnt much chance of us being ready this year due to time/money/fitness and previous boat experience being nil but 2013 would be an achieveable goal.

What would be are first step in prep and a realistic expected cost/budget to go racing next year?

Eukanuba

The amount you spend is directly proportional to the amount you break :)

I would suggest, if you are keen - getting a ride on the deck of an experienced driver.. it'll make you better - and besides, who know's if after you drop $4000-5000 that you still want to race ?

You'd be better to put your hand up - do a couple seasons, then expand ( if you decide you want to ) into your own boat.. but if you get a good driver - and you're prepared to put your hand in your pocket to help pay some of the bills.. that you may be happy to stick with a driver.. and you'll be able to race a season or 2 for a lower cost...

Pricings estimated -

$500 pp insurance fee and club fee
$1500 boat ( should be enough there for fuel tanks etc )
$1500 motor ( second hand )
$ 150 helmet
$ 150 wetsuit
$ 100 Life jacket
$ 50 gloves
$ 50 booties
$ 1000 propellors ( you probably wont have anything, so you'll need plenty to get you started )
$ 500 trailer ( you need one to get your stuff around )

You'll need camping gear too... if you havent already got the stuff you need...

My only condition from this point on - is that if I'm going to invest in a decky - then I want a decky that WILL attend for training, WILL come to repair the boat - and WILL put the hand in the pocket to help pay a share in boat fuel, oil and race fees..

I'm sick of continually putting my hand in my pocket to pay - and then having the decky pull out after 1 season.. so from now on - it's a minimum 2 year contract on my decky's.. :)

That being said... I have 3 boats, 4 motors - and I fully expect my decky to become a skilled driver - incase I am injured and they need to take the stick..

Mr_Mike
08-03-2012, 04:01 PM
i assume its pretty physically demanding being a decky?

Bare with me cos i am a complete n00b as far as this is concerned, but i assume the deckys main role is to weight shift about the boat when cornering etc?

Belltower
08-03-2012, 06:32 PM
That, and to pick the bitch up when the water levels are too damn low.

Eukanuba
09-03-2012, 10:55 AM
the role of the decky is very important.. if the decky isnt paying attention - it's very easy to end up, upside down - and throughly smashed up..

A good decky is worth their weight in beers.. easily :)

Eukanuba
06-05-2012, 09:21 PM
Ok, I need a decky - someone that's going to commit for the training and time it will take to get them upto speed.. I need someone that can definitely commit to the race and to doing the next 2 events on the racing calendar so they can get their race licence and entry points.
You will be expected to 1. help fix shit, 2. commit to training

You will have to camp and enjoy a campfire.. and when we finish this 40th year race.. celebrate like it's 1999 :)

Has anyone ever worked/vollied on the Support team for the Avon..

I've always wondered about putting my name down to give it a bash. Would it be suitable for someone who is a noob to this sort of racing but has pretty good smarts when it comes to staying calm and doing what needs to be done when it matters?

I started in the ASU ( Avon Support Unit ).. I got my boat skills there, learned to drive.. and did my RST through the ASU.

I have been a sweep driver for ASU for 3 descents - and I'll gladly put my hand up to go in a boat again if my plans dont come through this year to race my rig..

there are plenty of role's in the ASU from cooking meals to being a recovery diver.. communications, 4wd crew.. the list is huge.. and they're all volunteers..

Without the ASU the race wouldnt happen, period..

I have gone over every year to see my old crews - and we have a beer.. even though I went over the fence to being a racer.. I'll put my hand up and help train new boaties..
I appreciated them being there last year when I almost drowned at emu's..

4wd crew sounds right up my alley haha..

I will send an email off to see if they need people for this year. Im not working so might aswell make use of my time.

Just a quick note on the ASU. I am about as useless as a useless fat bastard can be but for the last two years i have started with the ASU. If you can throw a rope and lift stuff you can be of use and even though i am a very quiet and frankly shy person it has been easy to learn and meet people.
I am hoping to be of more use sometime soon however i have to actually manage to get to some of the training session and learn some stuff.

If you have any interest in the race and want to see it up close and from spots normal people dont get to go join the ASU, you wont regret it.

I'm keen to do this but unfortunately due to work commitments of long FIFO rosters, I'm out for any help in relation to this. For many years I have bared the cold up there to watch my father do it in a kayak but never done it myself. This truely is a challenge of strength, commitment and stamina. And then there is the warmth of the other crews lending a hand where they can, at the end of day 1, to get everyone's crafts up to a workable condition to put to the test on the second day. This truely is a great experience, whether it's part of a support crew for an entered vessel, the volounteer support, or a participant themself. I would love to do the Avon one day but that won't be anytime soon. Maybe next year with less workload but I'll wait and see what next year brings.

All the best finding someone to go with you Euk.

#234 is in again for the 40th..

However we are a guaranteed no-start due to my driver needing injections in his spine for an injury he had at work..

Unless there's someone in here, that's got enough points in Power Boat's to be able to jump in and go standard or sports ?

Chances are, we'll roll the boat to the start line - then put it back on and go home..

Either way, we dropped about $1600 getting in.. nothing we can do for a lack of water..

Bad Luck Texm78 - you did bloody well to get through to Bells, so don't feel too bad.

I pulled out this year - low levels just didn't look like fun to me.

Eukanuba - What number were you racing this year. I ended up with quite a few photos from Bells, but can't see #234 in the results ?
