Ok, this is one of my pet hates. Why the hell would you blow money on a personalised plate, just to tell us what type of car it is?? Yes, I can see you have a falcon xr6, BECAUSE THATS WHAT THE BADGE SAYS!!!

I see so many cars lately with this sort of thing. Ok, fine if you have a 'show car', and it's been in mags etc, but not if it's for everyday use.

Don't get me wrong, I like personalised plates, but you won't see me with 81COROLLA (or similar) on my plates.

Half the time i think it's a case of more dollars than sense!

Grr! <_<

naaaaaaah na na! You bought the bike with that as a part of the paint scheme, these Holden drivers make a concious decision after getting a Holden to buy a large sticker saying 'Holden' and put it on their windscreen.

"It'll look sick maaaaate, another VB?"

Totally different ballpark.

The less distinguishing features the better in my opinion. It's going to be a lot easier for someone to remember your plate if it's a word as opposed to the normal gibberish -and I like anonymity. (Same goes for most bling, but I'd be silly to speak out against bling in here wouldn't I. ;) )

ive often considered a plate with a random mix of O's and zeros for that reason. :P

Ha ha! In WA I've seen number personalised plates that are about ten characters or something. In vic its restricted to 6 characters and there can't be any numbers in front of letters so some of the plates require a bit of translation. I did see a clubsport or SS with "NOREGO" a couple of weeks ago. New bike/car pride has sometimes made me think about getting one but then I realised they do attract attention and are easy for people to remember....

On the other side its much easier for the police to notice a stolen blue R1 with custom plate than with stock, and given the rate of bike theft recently that may not be a bad thing. Although catch 22 its easier for thieves to notice your bike

Agreed. I used to have my plate on my last bike and it attracted some unwanted attention, thats for sure.
Then some wanker nicked it.
I got it remade for my car, but that only gets driven once a week, so no hassles there.

Haha yeah, I love seeing those wankers with plates like FEARSM, after the cruise on the 24th I went to fill up and there was this VC commo which sounded like it didnt even have an exhaust with this big wife beater in it and the plates were FEAR, have also seen BADASS, there are some good ones out there though like 5LETA.

Almost as funny as those stickers they get like FEARLESS - gaurantee you if you ran at them with a 12 gauge, a ski mask and a big hunting knife they would shit themselves, also bad boy and bad girl stickers, wtf is with that - I really hate those ones that say good girls go to heaven and bad girls go everywhere, WTF!!!

Always gives me a good laugh...

Feel like ringing up one day and saying "have you still got the plates?"
and when they get real excited that they might make somewhere close to $10,000, and say "yes!"

I reckon it's the 'thrill' of being the first person in the state to have a plate with the name of that particular model car on it - doesn't do it for me, but I reckon some people would get hard/wet looking at their vehicle and say: "Oooh, I have an Excel and I have the only plates in the state that says 'EXCEL' - fark I'm HOT!!! All other Excel owners will be so envious that my plates say EXCEL and theirs don't. They must think I am so well endowed and will no doubt want to sleep with me as I am the SH*T and my plates say EXCEL... 'oooh, oooh, touch me, if you're lucky I will let you sit in my car and you will soon be overcome by my obvious brilliance of being the first person to think of getting EXCEL plates for my Excel... And once you realise that NO ONE ELSE in the state can have these plates while I have them then you will so overawed by my supreme magnificence that you will resolve your will to mine and will forever be in my power!'"

But then again, maybe that's just what I think! :P

Wow, you must definately have put some thought into it huh.

Yeah, I have thought of getting 1100101 for my plates. It may not be easy to remember but I'm sure if someone wants it reported they could just say 'a black bike with 1s/0s or Is/Os for its reg around this particular area'
Wouldnt be hard to track down unless there are a few people who are willing to go with the idea :D :D

Now THAT's an interesting idea - wonder what the licensing department would think if they all of a sudden got a stack of orders for custom plates based on 1s and 0s? :D

That would be 128(?) combinations based upon 1 and 0 alone - add in Is and Os and it would be, umm, more

Personally I don't have a problem with custom plates myself. So what if people like to have the name of their vehicle or themself as their plate? I would rather see EXCEL, HILUX or JOHN, BEC etc any day rather then 2FAST4U/NVTHIS or some other shit like that.

Cant say I have a problem with stickers on the rear window either... Yeah it says Holden, the car is a holden, whats the big deal? It makes the car stand out which is obviously the effect they were after. I dont see it as being any different to any other visual mods done on ya car. If ya dont like it, dont do it to your vehicle. Simple... :)

And no I dont have custom plates or a vehicle with stickers on it before anyone asks :P

Nah I agree with you RZ. I don't care. The ones that kinda annoy me, though, are the ones where people having a private joke - like something that I can NEVER understand and I'm not meant to. Only reason that annoys me is because I'm not in on the joke!!

We ran through the whole range of customised plate discussions for my sister's last car. (Iroc Z28 Camaro) Came up with all the obvious... CAMARO, IROC, I ROC, IROCD, ROCD and a few others. Ended up deciding they were all poxy and she kept the normal plate. We figured she'd get sick of it awfully quickly and couldn't think of anything she liked enough that wasn't already gone! All the really clever ones are all taken. I do appreciate some of them but mostly I just figure I'd rather spend the money on other things.

I figure the government gets enough money out of me as it is!

plates with your name on it are cool, mainly for the reason people know who you are, especially if it's with bikes and psb. if i had a newer car i want to get DAISED as mine :D

what makes me laugh though is the NVTHIS plates or similar, especially on a VP wagon with more rust than the Bucket (my car). I was thinking of getting plates with YOUWISH or similar on mine ;)

My grandfather bought the Honda S2000 when it was released and managed to get [S2000] as his plates. Look pretty good IMO, Black car with black and white number plates. I'm pretty sure he made a bit of cash on the plates when it came to resale. The plates that came with car b4 he personalized had [1ank"] as the first four standard symbols. My grandad being the seedy prick he is loved that just as much.

Friend of mine wanted to buy an old Merc and get [MERCLOL] plates...I told him if he did I'd get [SUBAROFL]. He wussed out. :)

Worst plate I've seen recently would have to be the old guy in a Charade with the plates [ICUUQTU]. *shudder*

You will not believe the Stamp Duty you got to pay when you "Buy someone else’s plate"

Off the top of my head when I sold me plate I the Stamp Duty was something like:

1 Character Eg. “A”: $6,500
2 Character Eg. “R6”: $3,500 (and I wanted to get R6, but the Gov. had it Reserved)

There are a few other types of plates that are between $2,000 - $500
Then all “Other Plates” Cost $59 to Transfer.

So what do you think about that?
BEWARE of buying a personal plate it may cost you loads in Stamp Duty just to get it into your name.

If you think I was bashing him you don't know me very well (or at all.)
It was only a comment - no bashing involved.
I really don't care what people put on their cars.
I do think that's a particularly stupid one, but that's only my opinion.
As Jenna said above and I said in my previous post - I think the government gets enough money. I'd rather spend it on something else.

Hmmmm Laugh if you like.... like it or not, thats up to you... But my plates are...

MYMNRO and MYR6

So what, I like them both and paid for them both, and you know what its my money and I'll do what I like with it (toys toys toys) . They are both exactly what I wanted....

The Monaro is Silver 2002 and yes its a V8 of course and I dont claim that its the fastest car around and frankly dont care that its not, its mine and I love it. (Ive had the WRX and love that, thought I would try some thing different this time, more of a luxury sports car, I'm getting old (30)...

The R6 is also silver 04 model fitted with a yoshi pipe, power commander, partially polished the rims, oggi knobs and again I love it. Never had any troubles with the cops, although if I am doing anything Silly (but we all know that we dont really) I just cover the plate with my rego sticker...

So there you have it...

I would even attach a photo for you all to enjoy, but I'm at work at the moment, so might just have to wait for another time...

Oh by the way if anyone wants to say hi, if you see me riding or driving, go for it... I dont really have any mates that ride anymore, so most of the time its just me, so keen to meet some interested riders out there..

Enuff said...

Oh by the way I only paid about $290 for the car, and I forget for the bike but was less than that....

I'm a sucker for custom plates. Nice to have a plate in a colour that matches your vehicle. I had INIMINI (eeny-meeny) on my Morris Mini for which I thought it would be good if I had a mini moke and I could then get MINIMO (miny-mow).... Aw, c'mon.... eeny-meeny-miny-mo. Classic stuff people! And I had WARCRY on my Ducati748 with the 50mm big bore Arrow carbon pipes.... and now I have CRAZED which was originally for my Z1000 (well, it had to have 'ZED' in it, did'nit?) and is now on my Aprilia Mille... To each their own. I mean, some people out there ride bikes I wouldn't be seen dead on.... And the colours of some of them!!!! PLEEEEZE!!!! :)
And my pet hate... bling done wrong. I think a reflected blue light looks cool - but seeing the tube looks stupid - like a bug zapper. Plus, a visible tube is illegal. See - ugly is sometimes illegal!

WTF??

So this means, that because I have plates "MYR6" on my bike, that I am a tool??

I mean it's *obviously* an R6, but apparently I'm not allowed to be a proud of the bike I own??

If others have worked their ass off, saved, and had wished for their car, as much as I had for my bike (and Daise, you should understand even slightly what it's like to want for something that badly) then maybe they want to get plates that are specific for their car/bike as they take a lot of pride in that machine. And take pride in the fact that, after all that pain and waiting, they can finally say it's "MINE". It may not be a fantastic car/bike in your opinion, but if they take pride in it, then who are you to denigrate them for it?

I have no problems that you may disagree with these people, but why rave about it, what is it going to solve? You don't understand it, then don't do it, no one is forcing you.

So good on 'em. I'd do it 10 times over and not give two shits what anyone else thought about my PERSONALISED plates.

The plates are the thing that sets them apart from every other vehicle that may look the same.

Although i must admit that the only thing that does look stupid is when there is a personalised plate on a piece of junk! If the plates worth more then the vehicle it is on, maybe it is time to reconsider

TRYME is owned by one of my mates Terry, its now a Supercharged with NOS, purely used as a burnout car unless hes gotta get sum groceries.

Daise sorry, but this threads a lil silly, i come from a car background, for all those cars u see like MAZDA6, or MPS, etc, usually they are a gift by the dealership for buying the first of that car in W.A, happens quite allot.
People that buy other ones are there to be seen, I was thinking of getting Wedge1, and Wedge2 for my car and bike, but havent got the cash as yet, car gets noticed quite allot in car circles so people usually recognise its me, makes "Spotted" threads more interesting to read :P

As for the stickers, each to their own, why do some people put racing colours on 250's etc, and never take em to the track. Some of the colours are shockin, but theres nothing wrong with them doing it.
My 2c.
Cheers

i think i saw a statesman in northbridge, behind the deen, that had plates that said moveover backwards... now thats a good idea. And yeah, everyone here should get liscense plates for their bike using completely mistakeable symbols, I, 1, O, 0, X, K, etc etc... if ever front plates get brought in i'd def go out and get one, just to stick it a little deeper to em, better than illegal fake plates anyhow.

Daise, you certainly have created an emotive thread with diverse opinions. I have been 'guilty' of having personalised plates for many years. My first one was in NSW in 1972.
Then you could only chose 2 letters & no choice of numbers. I got VN 023 and it cost $25.
All of the funds raised then went to genuine Road Safety Research.

Older citizens have personal plates as it helps us with the 'KISS' principle during 'senior' moments. But my main reason for the ones on the bike is the ridiculous size of the current standard issue plates with 6 number/letter combinations. On most bikes I think they look pretty ugly - they are too wide and cumbersome, (although we are fortunate not to have the 'billboard' monsters like the UK). I have seen some bent 90 degrees at each end, but that doesn't really improve the look. Without wishing to detract from some of the clever 6/7 personalised combinations, for me the 'minimalist' look of the smaller M/C plate with 1, 2, or 3 characters is the way to go.

Regarding cost, my one bleat is you have to pay the same for one small bike plate as you do for 2 car plates, but we wont go down that path will we?

Each to their own - so let the 'debate' continue!

read somewhere that for regular personalised plates u need minimum 3 characters. Of course there are plates for special organisations that let u have less like the government cars - "1" that the PM gets around in, and I've seen "8" cruising around the western suburbs on occasions. I've seen 2 letter plates, but they'd be something special, not just an ordinary personalised plate.
