Try the ex-track tyres thread for a second-handy if money is tight? Will need to pay for fitting though.

Still road worthy tyres posted in there.

You talking Pilot Road 4's? I usually go between T4B or MC Pitstop & sometimes the Bike Dr, it just depends on who's got the best price

Yeah I currently have the PR4 on my Bird I've been using the PR family for years with good results, it had an old PR on it when I got it which got replaced with another Road, then about 4 PR2's, 3 PR3's and now the current PR4 and all have been improvements over the latter especially in wet grip

I tried a couple of others brands at odd times but always went back to the PR family on the back. I have also run the PR2's on the front at times but most of the time I ran a Pilot Power front to help quicken turn in a bit

I find the PR family to be great tyres for the Bird, I normally get around 10 000km's from a rear but that's because I'm heavy at ~145kg's, I ride her hard on coarse chip country roads primarily to and from work and country rides so have a tendency to wear the sides out
Some of the guys that were on the OzBB site were getting close to double that from a rear with more highway type use

FYI depending on what type of riding you do the Power on the rear will likely wear out quicker than the Road, especially if most of your riding is straight line Fwy type stuff
That is one reason I like the Roads on the rear, particularly the 2-4 as they are dual compound so you get the grip of a Power on the sides but a harder compound in the middle for more straight line commuting stuff
The front doesn't get quite as much loading so using a Power front sort of aligns the wear characteristics so that usually they get changed as a pair

Then I'd certainly be looking more towards a PR4 rear than a PP if the commute is mostly straight line stuff, especially given the 1kF like the Bird is a heavy bike
If all your riding was weekend twisties then maybe the PP would be an option but the one PP rear I tried tended to wear quite quick in the centre and cup & feather a lot with straight line stuff

I think if you need a front tyre cheap, you don't want to be choosy.

"chasing a front tyre 120/70R17 (I think) with legal tread" will net you more results.
Trying to think of a wise and sincere signature quote, but the only words that leap to mind are, "TITTY SPRINKLES"

I've just swapped a road tyre of the Viffa for some sticky race rubber...the tyre is in great nick and has only been swapped because the bike in only for track-work.
I'll have a look when I get home and check the size(Standard on the Viffa is 120/60/R17), work out a price and post back here if you're still looking by that stage.
