    Commando Comeback

    The time has come to refresh my '73 Commando. I came up with a concept of what I want to do with it a few weeks ago and have made a start, although every second day I change my mind on what I want to achieve..

    The Bike


    The date stamp reads October '73, exactly the same time as Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was released, one of my favourite all time records. At some time this bike made its way to New Zealand which is where I have picked up the trail. I have copies of the advertisement in a bike mag printed in the early 1990's. It was then brought over the ditch by a bloke I used to work with who had left it sitting in a shed unused for some time. As he was moving to Darwin he sold it to me as a complete but partly disassembled bike at a reasonable price. That was 2008 and I have ridden it often, worked on it more often and ignored it because of frustration even more often still. It is pretty much stock except for the Boyer ignition and Mikuni carb.

    I have done a few small jobs on it but I have always been aware that a full resto was necessary at some stage. The frame needs painting, the alloy needs cleaning, and everything needs a good clean up. Some things I have done in the past are change the rectifier to a solid state thingy, put a helicoil in the head to stop an air leak past the spark plug and painted the engine barrel because the original black just looked shit.

    So this is how she sits now


    This last week I have stripped it down and preparing all the steel parts for painting, and will also pull the engine down. I have had a chat with Muz and he is going to help throughout the project. My first jobs though are to clean up the shed, get a decent work bench and get a stereo because I cant do this without tunes. I'll update as I progress but don't expect a fast turnaround. The timeframr I have set myself is to have it on the road for my 40th birthday which is about 2 years away.

    I'm ok with MotoGP screenings if you are ok with the free to air broadcast. I have hit the first hurdle in that I need a specific tool to remove the engine sprocket from the primary chain case which I don't have

    Its been a few weeks now since the start of the project. I'm really happy with the condition of the frame now it is bare and the swingarm is also very straight. The only thing to notice really is a sign of slight wear on the swingarm pivot pin. There is 1 locating bolt in the middle of it so I'll put in a second one to make sure it is really secure.

    So its off to the powdercoaters now with a few other bits. The yokes will be painted and they have kind of a rough surface so I'll start sanding them back and prepping. I'm now thinking about the engine, gearbox and primary. They really need a good acid wash or something to clean them up properly, I want them to have a nice shine when its done.

    Nice project.

    EDIT: just reading your posts, I'd have a look at vapour blasting for the engine, gear box ... pretty much all of it. it will clean it up beautifully, and wont damage the parts.

    I'll find a pic of a 75 Z1B engine that was done recently by a mate of mine on a similar resto project.

    First post in a while...

    The first thing I have learned on this build is that I don't take enough photos before I get to work. I have the gearbox getting vapour blasted as I type and I just realised that I won't have a record of the condition before it went in now. I have my frame back at home with me now from the powdercoaters along with most of the steel parts from all over the bike. It feels really nice to finally have given this bike a good bit of TLC it deserves.


    My plan at this stage is to gradually work through all the parts one piece at a time and make them as new as possible again. The gearbox seamed like a good place to start as I have disassembled it before and know my way around it a bit. The engine is in three parts with the head needing the most attention at this stage. One valve has sunk quite deep into the head and will need to be re-seated, the exhaust port threads are quite corroded and shitty looking and will need re grooving, if thats even possible. The cylinders appear to me to be quite smooth and I believe they need honing.



    The bottom end is interesting. The pistons appear to be quite new with very little age or wear. When I pulled the little mesh filter out from the bung there was a number of small metallic pieces, which confirmed my fear that I saw some come out with the oil when I last changed it. When wiggling the conrods sideways there is just a little bit of movement but a bit too much for me to be happy. So I reckon there is evidence of a engine-go-bang type scenario sometime in this bikes history. I don't want to go any further with the engine just yet because I want to take all the pieces to the vapour blaster at the same time along with the wheel hubs and whatever else I can think of. Also I will get totally confused if I don't finish the gearbox first and clear the bench off.

    I will edit this post soon with pics, just trying to work out a few things
