    R1 Inconsistent knock under load

    Hey Guy's,

A friends 2009 R1 has developed an inconsistent knock under load but it doesn't seem to be related to the RPM. There's no knocking at Idle, oil level is fine, oils fresh and the chain tension is good. Has anyone else encountered this issue before? Any help would be much appreciated.

Knocking, as in an intermittent miss, like a coil breaking down? Or is it a mechanical type knock? More info needed.

He is refering to it as a mechanical knock. He said he can also feel it through his left foot.

Is the chain alignment straight? The chain might be riding up the countershaft sprocket a bit, long shot. Flogged Rear wheel bearings could do it, possibly. More info needed, is it 1 big knock every now and then or lots of small ones? When you say under load do you mean accelerating hard, or like being in 6th climbing a hill doing 50kmh?

How are the sprockets? any missing teeth? Has he checked the stator/alternator to see that nothing has fallen off? How is the cam chain tensioner? Has it dropped a valve?

Many different things that it may be, I'd suggest if he has no mechanical knowledge, go and see a decent mechanic.

Cullys Yamaha or Chain Reaction Motorcycles are two that come to mind, and have a huge amount of experience with R1's

Supposably some of the 09 R1s had crank balance issues
