Do you reckon it could have been an engine runaway like the 7 Mile one you posted a while back?

they need to have FWD or REV selected and held-----you need to sim a warning device/cutout re-energiser every 3 minutes just to prove you ain't dead yet,by hand or foot depends on the type..

BHP drone train ....driver control operations failure ?? highly unlikely.. prolly left it in drive for the slight incline.....and the A/C kicked the revs up...and she took off.

So all override fail..system autonomous...?? nah.. prolly had a stick jammed on the recount switch and high idle/drive set...too hard to jerry rig overide.. with all the cctv they have on these trains.

Which begs the question why would you get out ??????? they still tow with square wheels and a blown brake car compressor....fuk knows!!

I see around 10 RIO trains a day in the yards next to work...they're just a big genset on wheels... with IC wheel motors think tesla with diesel power...so no- not engine overspeed /runaway..

Can't wait for the tribunal hearing and recommendations....BHP.. worksafe is gonna have a field day..

Looks bloody spectacular. Would have loved to get footage of that occurring with a drone.

Don't get me wrong it's a massive cost and better if it never happened, but if it's going to happen you may as well get video of it.

Had 2 hrs to concoct a plan to stop it-- about 200 kms @ 90 kph. roughly

And there is no plan - 'cause this has never happened before, how did they find out it was fukkin off without the driver? A moving 'dot' on a control panel?

Still no check in by live operator? Punching in on the deadmans ? with a hapless driver at trackside ?...Drive control system fail? noyt just a single engine config. either?

My truckie mate reckons there is no way to climb to the front even if you did manage to get on a carriage when it first started to roll...250 cars don't accelerate that fast......

Loss might be in millions...hardly significant in the scheme of things..

yeah they can build speed pretty quick - I've seen them go from a stand to 20kms/hr in a few seconds

I'm assuming the driver had a radio or a sat phone - there would be redundant comms - phones along the track etc

250 cars 3 engines zero to fukall in 20 mins

20kph in secs..??? doesn't even equate to coupling stretch.

This is what happens when you have all the safeguards that 'The Big Australian' has in place...monumental fuckups.. and only the ones the -public- hear about.

So fair enough..'We were trialling 2 drivers on our ore trains.....but we thought cutting costs and employing just about anyone with arms and legs would be fine. What could possibly go wrong..?"

"After poaching all the failed QLD rail and RIO castoffs we thought there was a perfect scenario afoot to make huge inroads with our rail systems.."

Yep. carved a beaut inroad...straight into the Pilbara dirt....nice one BHP.....

I'm a tad cynical.. see I didn't buy BHP shares in 5th grade when a math teacher used to have cake days 'Mothers Choice' had a share give away with cake packet coupons.

IIRC BHP shares were 5.00 each. I think the cake packet was a 20c discount ( Mr Baker had bought over 10000 shares with 4 mates from soccer...'68-'69 ) hahhaa

Seeing the tiny motor used in anger is more satisfying than just hearing it run...
Also see Italian ship engine builder..they are non runner motors and fascinating to watch vids.
