Is owning a stock S1000RR areliability nightmare, or just this one?

    Well something doesn't add up...

These are going for between 10-15k for the 2010/11 model on bikesales and gumtree with only subtle mods.

This one, looks like it's being kept in a chook pen, has had an engine that clearly has already hand-grenaded itself once before, looking at the forks it's been used as a drag bike as there is 15cm of forks poking out from the top of the yokes.

Depending on the quality of the carbon fairings these can come in at anything between $2.5k to $5k+ and he's asking $8k for it.

Fuck knows what else is wrong with it.

Could be a bargain, could see you spending another $8k on it within a week of ownership.

But often if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Much like the prettiest girl in a Thai bar might not be a girl.

Approach with caution and only buy if you really really know what you're looking at.

A little further investigation suggests the BMW S1000rr was used heavily as a drag racing bike so itís no doubt had a tough life. I still think itís a bargain though

Generally speaking, no. The S1000RR's are quite reliable from what I've heard/seen. There are a lot of them which come out on country rides and from talking to the owners I've never heard of any common problems. The head lights are the biggest talking point usually and thats just a matter of taste.

You mean a bike that looks like it's suffered a pretty severe stroke isn't to everyone's taste?

Unless you have a very weird riding stye, when you are hanging into the handle bars, the headlights should be out of sight/out of mind

headlights are reflected in the latte sets shopfront windows....

Did I hear you say they don't have problems ( s1000rr ) except valve head drop = catastrophic engine failure..on K' as low as 35k....?

Oh wai that was the gen 1...unacknowledged global recall VW esk....

    The point is moot...bike sold.

After visiting a few local mechanics that have worked on them after shit breaks, I will never, ever own an S1000R(R). I'd rather spend my money on bling bits than buying parts which are stupidly expensive or annoyingly unavailable as aftermarket.

Yep, I'm glad I never went down the S1000RR route, love the look of the O.o, but I'll be fucked if I'm paying 1.5x cost of everything just because Euro bike.

    Back to bargain bikes...

As a cheap bunky runabout.... Plus it's Honda so it'll out live you....

The added bonus being is that if pulled over for being a dick you can yell at the cop "THIS IS SPADA"

I know there were a few niggles that were resolve in the later RC8R version of the bike. The 08 was the first run of them so there could be something but I'm not aware of any major faults. That being said if something does go wrong with it (it does have 37,000k's on it) it certainly won't be cheap to fix and probably difficult to find parts for.
