    All things Vinyl (records)

Just thinking, after getting back into collecting and listening to vinyl again I thought maybe share some gems for those with similar interests. Let it be known this thread is for all things record related, titles, players, shops (real world and online), gear, where you go for bargains, garage sale bargains, maybe swaps and sales amongst those on PSB. Thread is no for dj'ing topics or gear, prefer to keep it to conventional playback and collecting.

I'll start, after years of collecting I sold it all, so just starting again, been through technics decks, LP12, Dual now using a Pro-Ject Carbon record player, couple with a NAD 304 stereo amp, using the phono stage on that with mission speakers and headphones and my comfy Eames chair for listening.

Used to be more selection a while back for stores.

So far my list of stores I've got to visit is:

Noise Pollution -280 William Street, Northbridge
Safari Record Shack - 189 William Street, Northbridge
    Dada's - Pier Street, Perth
78 Records - Murray street, Perth
Planet - Beaufort and Walcott streets, Mt. Lawley
Fat Shan Records - basement 37 Barrack street, Perth
Unknown Treasures - Coventry Square Markets, Walter road, Morley
Mills Records - 22 Adelaide Street, Fremantle
Midland Records - 7 Spring Park road, Midland
Junction Records - 27 -35 William street, Fremantle
The Record Finder - 87 High street, Fremantle
Replay Records - 5 Royal street, Kenwick

Been to a few, Replay is chockers and holds a fair bit, disappointed by the lack of collection size thesedays at 78's and Dada's.

Few online sites I've ordered from juno.co.uk and insound.com

    Okay go!

I've got a couple of hundred records, a few digitally remastered Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, Uriah Heap, Alan Parson Project and so on. Many have only been played once and that was to copy them onto a thing called a cassette so them so I could play them in the car. There's just something inviting about that hiss and crackle before the music starts, anticipation that CD/MP3 can never provide unless they copy from vinyl.

Yes, poor handling, they attended far too many parties than was good for them.

I also have a huge collection of 45's including all the Beatles singles on Parlaphone. I doubt they would be worth much as they sold millions.

Can't see me parting with them though, I sometimes get nostalgic and thumb through them, they all take me back to a time and place.

    Sigh...

My mate down the road is a collector, some of his albums are worth thousands. He has pre-release Beatles albums that were only sent to DJs.

That something is called extraneous noise... Just spitballing here, but I suspect you could easily superimpose it onto a digital recording.

Does all things vinyl exclude shellac 78's? I hope not.

I wouldnt mind if anyone knows of a good place to get replacement needles for he gramophone. I have sourced a couple hundred locally on ebay, but you get through them quickly when they are only single use.

The record finder has a large selection (vinyl and shellac) - the problem is trying to find what you are after.

I am also on the lookout for anything by the Inkspots, Dean Martin, Ella Fitz or similar in 78 size.

I recently bought a mid 80's Yamaha P-500 direct drive player, hooked it up to an older Yamaha Amp/receiver with some refurbished late 70's Pioneer HPM-60 speakers and a set of big old PYE speakers that I installed Yamaha mids/tweeters and custom crossovers, keeping the original 12" woofers.

Borrowed some vinyl from my parents and picked up a couple of my own.
I've always liked the sound from vinyl, especially with some of the classic 60s/70s albums.
Also have a decent carbon fibre brush to clean the dust out before each play

Anyways, 78 Records pissed me off... I ordered 3 records from them, they mailed them all separately and charged me a $10 postage fee each time.
I haven't really looked for too much more yet, but bought a couple from ebay.

I did see a tin full on ebay. No exclusion on records. The old man has a shed full of bakelite/shellac 78's, usually what's left over after a huge auction buy of a private record collection, keeps the good vinyl and chucks the 78's out in the shed. I think Rega and Pro-ject make a stand alone 78 player.

Was going through a mates collection a few years ago after his daughters bought him a turntable and he has some of his sisters Beatles records among other golden oldies. Due to his transient nature they now reside with me so they don't disappear into the ether. I also have most of my records from my youth. May have to go through them again and set up the turntable.

I can remember when my eldest still lived at home and was listening to AC/DC's TNT on the 'puter, I went and pulled the album out and showed him. Being mid teens he was horrified
that he liked the same music.

Still spewing we threw out a lot of grandma's 78's when she left her house in Baysie. Must check around the family and see if we still have the 78 of my Dad and his dodgy Northbridge mates they recorded once.

I've got heaps of LP's, EP's and some singles going back to the late 60's through to mid- 80's when I left home. After my first trip to the USA in '88 I came home with a CD Walkman, Sharp CD ghetto blaster (I still have both) and a shed load of CD's (which at the time were amazing) so I sold some of my 80's cassettes (wish I kept them) but luckily did keep the majority of them. I do buy old albums when I spot them, in 2011 I bought the 4 album release of 'Nevermind' which was the first new vinyl album I have bought since 1985. Am going over the US shortly for a few weeks, so will hopefully be bringing some good stuff back. My most prized albums are first release prints of Led Zeppelin 1,2,3 and 4.

I use a Kenwood turntable (circa 1994) with a Pioneer amp and Bose speakers. Sounds great!
Christie. 1972-2012. RIP my dear friend. Never forgotten.

    Acquired today.

Noise Pollution Records was a good store. Had a good chat with Maurice in there. Good place to talk politics.

Got some good stuff tucked away in there.

Inspired by this thread I've just had a quick browse and found a Ry Cooder live album from 1976,
Show Time Ry Cooder Live Chicken Revue.
Haven't listened to this for years, it holds up surprisingly well.
