I love sharks. So cool. Intelligent and learn. They are learning we are edible. In a short space of time.
My point still stands - ROI on general human-saving measures would have drumlining and unscientific culling rates pretty much at the bottom. I'm not shark-hugging here (fuck that!), just expressing my opinion that it's an issue being overblown and a waste of resources if those resources DON'T include a proper scientific response - ie the money spent on drumlines and culling could be better spent and save many more lives if spent elsewhere.

    I don't get it.
People who ride motorcycles arguing that the risk of getting bitten by a shark, which would have to be 100,000 times less likely than getting killed on the road (pulled this number out my arse), is big enough that we should kill top level predators in their home.
    Take a breath people.
There are bigger things to be worried about.

People love to get their pants in a twist by what they do and don't see on "the front page", but in the same breath will argue that hyperbole has no place in arguments.

Sure, suicide won't make front page headlines every day, that's because it's not sexy. Sharks will make stories worldwide, and as a result will change people's opinions on the safety of locations.

Whether we need to reign in sensationalist bullshit is an entirely different story, but as it stands the only way to combat shark sensationalism is by trotting out "meaningful responses".

there are more deaths per year from bees and wasps than sharks. So why isn't there an out cry about this?
Okay, think of it this way: If you've got a bee problem in your roof, do you move house? no, you call pest control. Where's the outcry there?

I literally just killed a wolf spider that was hanging around the laundry.
It kept coming back after I'd put it outside (twice in a week), but we have pets and they're the priority. I didn't like killing it, but felt it necessary.

In all honesty i don't have a strong opinion either way. I don't know enough about the subject and sometimes playing devil's advocate is fun. I just really wanted to argue with that loudmouthed turdnocerus.

You bastard. I have forwarded this post on to PETA. Expect a rabid horde with blonde dreads (shudder) and hairy pits at your door very soon.

He's not though. I think what most people lack is the ability to sit on the fence with stuff like this, because unless you're an accomplished marine biologist, your opinion means jack shit.
So i'm happy to keep spouting that i'd like the option to shoot the odd shark that won't fuck off from the beach every now and then (because ultimately it doesn't matter).

If you can't push past an argument on an internet forum, about something you're not a specialist in WITHOUT instantly resorting to childish insults the minute your opinion is challenged, you need professional help.

I'm only guessing but I think that WA shark attacks have been doubling each decade, I doubt the number of people swimming in the ocean has been doubling each decade. If should have a look for the data but CBF.

Probably correlates with a douche quotient. Post mining boom the numbers might go down

Seriously though, doubling a decade? Even at an exponential rate from single figures it amounts to a sparrow's fart when it comes to a mortality rate.

All I remember is that 30 years ago people used to ask me if I was afraid of getting eaten by a shark while windsurfing a couple of kilometers off the coast. I told them I never even thought about sharks, besides someone only gets killed every decade or so. More recently it seems that people are getting killed every 18 months or so. Something seems to have gone wrong.

Having said that I tell people that if you are worrying about sharks while windsurfing or surfing you are doing it wrong.

But then there is that instinct, I was windsurfing at Safety Bay a couple of months back when this dark shadow flashed past me. I hat a brick but it turns out it was actually a dark shadow, from a kiter.

One of the popular beliefs with the Tsavo man eaters is that the people brought in to work on the railroad (that were getting eaten) were vegeterian, and smelled like food.

Great whites prefer colder water so less likely for them to be up in Queensland compared to NSW and down Perth and south west area.

You killed the spider because it was in your house with a high chance of causing damage. Same if you had a native inside your house. You would smash him with a bat if you could. But you can't walk around the suburbs randomly bashing natives because they might one night end up inside your bedroom.

Yes, their range extends to around the sunshine coast, hence comparing Gold Coast with northern NSW. QLD also have tigers and bull sharks. QLD's control methods work.

The rate of all unprovoked shark attacks Australia wide has almost trebled in just the past 20 years. That's the interesting story.

Is there such a thing as a "provoked shark attack".

    Taronga Zoo researchers define provoked/unprovoked.

Eg dragging a mako into a dingy = provoked. and stupid.

Depends how they're acting i suppose.

I guess the analogy i'm going for is if the same shark keeps arriving at the same location, close to shore, close to people then is that grounds to destroy it?
