Do this in the prisons and likely you'd be looking for another job... and potentially facing a magistrate.

Yeah, I believe that copper used the same 'just curious' defence.

To anyone genuinely surprised about the ruckus re this issue: nothing wrong with being curious, but if that was their sole motivation why not just look up stuff on the net like any other regular rubberneck would.

These cops took advantage of their position, plain and simple.

What if your neighbour is a cop and decides to look you up out of 'professional curiosity'? You still okay with that?

    Very good example.

It's a very simplistic view to state ' I'm okay with it I've done nothing wrong, nothing to hide'. I don't want people looking up my data without good cause or substantial suspicion or emergency requirements.

What if some dickhead believed you'd slighted him somehow and he went to his copper mate, ran your plate and gave details to a psychopath who now know's where you live. Fuck them and their lack of professionalism.

I think the example used is rather poor considering Mr Petrelis was in protective custody.

    Can you do better?

    True about my views.

But consider that this is confidential Police information being accessed by Police who wont exactly be selling it to Wikileaks!

Police computer was used in that instance inappropriately IIRC as well as the protecting officers going walkabout to come back and find him fatally OD'd in a perculiar position.

If this gets put to bed, then I have a small number of identities that I need a small amount of 'curious' information on.

In order to save valuable resources I could also do it myself, from home.

Just need that user name and password.
Sventek, being a predominantly lazy fuck can you please purchase some for me, bring me the stuff, create something I want after you think of it for me then clean my house, wash my car, dog, bike breathe for me.

Kinda petty, but rules be rules, give them a fine and a formal warning and be done with it.

Fire those that shared the information to press or made gain from it. Seriously though, what do you want them to do? fire half the force?

You're not concerned that half the force is breaching laws / code of conduct?

    Why?

You're prison officer and you should know who are you dealing with so you don't take any chances

You can't look at their file and see what offence are committed. That is just stupid, unless of course it is used for some sort of personal gain

In all fairness, there are enough miners out there that need a new career at the moment. Yep if there are bad eggs in there that need to be removed - it should be done as soon as possible, otherwise a culture of doing the wrong thing will get into the force.

If we get a speeding fine we are pretty much faorced to wear the consequences - we did something wrong they have proof. If the police have done somethign wrong then they need to have a similar set of firm consequences and the punishment should be higher than std civilians as they need to be held to a higher moral standard. Otherwise the police will not have the respect they shoudl have. Already the traffic enforcement group are already looked on with disdain over their targeting of speeders above all else... Similarly whenever there is a death in custody, excessive use of force or wrongful charge etc it does no good for the police image. The public now knows that at least 300 officers cannot be trusted with sensitive information.

vigilantism is wrong.. but isn't inaction worse?

two sides of the same "big brother" coin
cop 1 uses the system to stalk or spy on someone.. just because they can
cop 2 uses the system to find out about another cop's investigative effort as it may have been a family member being assaulted.. just to look and perhaps provide some "assistance"?
