Hundreds of WA cops being investigated for 'unauthorised computer usage'

    https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/...ins-kerr-peek/

According to the police union, it was merely 'professional curiosity'.

here we go, let me guess they get off with a slap on the wrist after doing something that would get most people fired. Considering they are supposed to be held to a higher moral standard, the fact the police union seems to think they should be allowed to get away with what are literally illegal practices is pretty messed up.

These are exactly the sort of dodgy coppers we should be getting rid of in favour of the more devious underhanded type.

So they had access to all the info in the state, and they chose to look up that loser? I think that alone is worthy of them being locked up.

If they want any vestige of integrity when it comes to protecting the metadata Government now wish to collect, they will need to do something or simply acknowledge its a joke and your personal details are up for grabs.

So they are cops, and have access to look at the files? So what
What is wrong with that, unless it was used for some sort of gain. Now when they want to look at the files you will need a permission? Fuck

    I don't understand

Each officer would have their unique ID for the system that would get logged when they access any file on it. IT can be a bitch, if any company wanted to fire anyone I'm sure IT could find a reason - "Accessed perthstreetbikes during work hours when the internet use policy says for work related use only". Noone follows those policies, I use my own works network for netflix if i'm haveing a real quiet day but if they really wanted to get you on anything...

yeah i would expect users to be logged, but there must also be some kind of automated watchdog that maybe notifies internal affairs if unusual system activity is detected.

I don't think cops are the most competent hackers around. It would be pretty stupid to access this sort of information using your own logon credentials.

hehe I know exactly how they were caught. I was part of cause

includes a pretty smart heuristic detection mechanism, escalating audits and notifications..

I don't need no one up in my business.

There are laws to protect that, and the job of the police is to enforce laws, not break them.

Pretty typical of the police union to defend them, I'm yet to see a wa cop to do something the union doesn't think is perfectly acceptable.

if i knew about things like that, i would be much more circumspect about telling people. those with vested interests and a propensity for mayhem might think of a way to find out the exact parameters of those algorithms.

Considering your outspoken views on big brother monitoring in pretty much every other thread, this post comes as a surprise to me.

Or is it only ok for them to look at peoples files if they aren't yours?

Some mathematicians much smarter than myself cooked up the algorithms. Similar used in dept of justice, etc.
