Probably not as many road going 2 strokes any more. For me it's all off road 2 stroke.

It's not just the 2-stroke section. The whole forum is a shadow of it's former self - Google 'motorbike forum' and PSB is nowhere near the top now.

When it's no longer any good for sandwiches?

    You could always toast it.
Do you remember the good old days before the internet?

when arguments were only entered into by the physically or intellectually able.

Just because 2 strokes are still getting built and to prove that someone is still developing them:

These guys just bought back auto lubrication (no premix!) - only they made the system so that it is controlled independantly of rpm and at certain amounts depending on the engines performance. resulting in significantly reduced emissions and still has decent piston longevity (relative to the other 300 two stroke racing machines)

My 2 road smokers are getting closer to being on the road, but it's a slow progress

Yamaha are still building the YZ smokers, and have just announced the return of Enduro smokers. KTM, Gas Gas... still building, just not enough developing!

Of course it is awesome to see Beta producing electronically controlled oil injection!!

Yep that was the bit I was highlighting - not just buildign but developing the engines too! Apparently Sherco are also developing a similar system, that plus fuel injection = 2 stroke comeback! (esp if they can get it past the California EPA regs etc)

If only the same sort of development budget was put into 2T as there has been in 4T development over the past 30 years, we'd be riding around 200hp 500cc bikes weighing 140 kg with Euro 4 emissions and simplicity of construction such that the average 15 year old can rebuild at home.

I think they'll eventually come back due to efficiency reasons - there's no reason they have to be the smoky dirty things based on mid-70s technology and the inherent weight advantage and lack of complexity gives manufacturing and potential efficiency benefits. Carting 20 kg less weight everywhere = less work = less fuel burn all other things being equal.

The issue is how to stop them burning oil, the Beta system reduces is drastically but doesnt stop it completely - it is a decent step in the right direction though. In truth some of the larger manufacturers (esp. Honda) dont like their simplicity and the fact they have less parts - it means they lose a large chunk of their servicing and spare parts income streams.

Yet carbon footprint is heavily reduced in manufacture, so depending on the country, tax benefits are to be had.
