I like the way you've worked it near the tip. Clean. Your belt machine is very versatile.

To be fair, working on such a large and thick tip is easier than a smaller blade.

Thought I would have a go at making a few blades myself.
I have some 1084 coming from over east, in the meantime my first attempt was a general camping/utility knife made from an old edger blade, jarrah and some steel bolts that I had lying about.

Still needs a little cleaning up... and I need a lot more practice at getting the plunge lines right, but not a bad first attempt I thought.

Gotta be honest and say its not entirely my idea, I watched a vid where someone made a karambit from and old lawnmower blade. But at $12 to replace, it wasn't a bad starting point.

Seriously nice. Props for retaining the Victa stamping.

Question: as an impromptu project, what did you use for the bulk metal removal/basic shaping?

    Thanks guys,

Bulk removal was 5inch grinder, and a cheapy 4inch belt grinder. I need to buy some cutting disks, possibly would an have been easier.

#1 , #2 and the beginnings of #3 (precut from Gameco). I have the grind pretty much finished just waiting on some larger brass pins before drilling the handle... followed by my first attempt at heat treating. Not sure how that will go, will be using a charcoal fire and cooking oil, then oven tempering if all goes well and it doesnt warp. Handle will be a brass bolster and jarrah for the remainder.

#3 Nearly finished, just a few bits to tidy up... bolsters are an arse to get right.

Yes fine idea. dont worry about cooking oil. You probably want the temp higher unless you using say peanut oil. Sump oil handles the temp you want and costs nothing.

Thanks, I considered that, but already had some cooking oil on hand, so wasn't a big problem... seemed to harden okay, file skated nicely, and no warping fortunately. Will have to see how well it keeps its edge in the long run.
