A couple of my contractors can't get on the piss right now because they are working too much. Taking advantage of opportunity in a time of change.

Well, been around mining a long, long time, and once again it's off and running, though I don't believe it will be close to the scale of the last effort. All the majors are cranking up new mines, some are fighting over leases, and labour is already an issue.

This time around, quite a few are planning to bale from big firms and either join a contracting group, or strike out on their own with a ute full of tools. 2 or 3 years of good coin then slide back into the big firms arms again. As our head honchos say, Trump/China/commodities prices or whatever, that's all short term white noise, the long term view seems rosy to them

Every second ad on the crap radio stations up here seems to be for contracting firms wanting labour.....

The big problem is going to be “quality” labour...

So many years of low apprenticeship numbers, and the quality of apprenticeships has left it’s mark...

We would take 2-4 supervisors Monday morning if we could get them...

Seems already the few short term fitters we've had through are more concerned with their phones than putting in the sort of effort that might land them a permanent job.

Apprentices, sigh.... it breaks my heart to see a few good young kids have the fire that burns within hosed down by fitters who seem to think all they are good for is fetching a cup of coffee or sweeping floors. I've got a beaut kid a the moment, indigenous girl, so keen, and I'm trying to cram her head full of what I know, yet I'll lose her in a couple of swings, and where she's going will barely acknowledge her existence, let alone teach her anything. And when they have to go out in the real world at the end of 4 years, they got no chance.....

Low apprentice numbers are one cause, but i agree another is the quality. My current company has a very well respected app program and takes good numbers every year but I'm hearing so many are coming through barely able to read or write properly. Not a good starting point with HD mechanics needing to be so computer literate now.

Back on the thread topic, i keep hearing and seeing how many projects are starting up and how many jobs are opening up. Yet i have been applying for 2-3 a week for the last 2yrs and had one interview in that entire time. Fucking HR/recruiters shit me

Yep already there . The game is using the people you know to find out the jobs before they get advertised

Sometimes they will ask if anybody knows someone decent looking for a job, and will simply ring them up [ plus we get a bonus if they get employed ]
But I grew tired of asking mates, who sound keen initially then say they can't leave dog/girlfriend or footy on the weekend, so I don't bother anymore.

These are the same mates who whinge about the difference in pay checks as well....can't win.

    In the news:

Perth drops from 17th most expensive city to 77th in the world.

    Fitness industry down 25%.

In other gossip, buddies across different industries all report in about a 25% drop from boom highs.

Things must be going great. Yep must be turning a corner. Yep nows the time to buy everything.

Yes. Yes. Yes. All peachy and wonderful 🤔🤔🤔

Still remember boom $$$ so they sit around or winge till good $$$ offered.
People working local were on more $$$ then what their worth, people on union construction sites ie Fiona Stanley were on minimum $60ph plus penalties.

Now local only getting $3 more then market rate and working away on not much more.... winge the company is a dog. Some people still on a decent wage and have no f*cking idea what the market value is......and want more.

Plenty of people out of work.......no point paying high wages.
Whole system is broke CEOs being paid enormous rates, companies earning billions of dollars in revenue but keep laying off staff.
    Housing unaffordable etc etc

They are paid high to clear their conscience after having to sack all those useless plebs!

Yeh, I don't get it. How is it justified that a CEO can earn what a bottom feeder at his company would earn in 200 years? (10mil compared to 50K)

No CEO does that amount of work.
