We're actually negotiating with them at the moment to up that to $1 million and 50%.

Some suppliers may look cheaper initially but it's often in your best interest to have preferred contracts.
I agree fully...its when the preferred ones start to take liberties that the problems occur...they know it takes forever to get through the red tape and, quiet often, we were the ones being questioned re our need for this or that and, more importantly, why did we have to have right now?

The worst ive seen recently is the pedestrian bridge in mandurah. Heads should roll for such wasteful and reckless spending from public servants. They had a huge ladder boom crane on standby for about six months and the actual bridge needed to be rebuilt prior to even installing. It is literally good for fuck all too.

I wonder with government contracts though, does it really matter how much they grossly overpay or how much they're overcharged?

If it costs $1B to build a hospital, but the contract the Govt chose is $4B... that's a huge profit for the company (which is taxed and given back to the Govt - 30% of whatever), the overpaid workers are taxed throughout the build (20-40% depending on pay given back to the Govt), all the shit they overpay for has been manufactured for profit (again, taxed and given back to the Govt) by workers (taxed)... there's such a long line of taxation the whole way through, does anyone know roughly how much a Govt truly is out of pocket if they spend say $4B on a project? Does it wither down to the original, more reasonable $1B? I have no idea how it works IRL

(and by 'out of pocket' I know their pocket was empty to begin with... it's taxpayers money)

..and it seems that this shining light of mediocrity will either need to be removed in it's entirety or placed at some other point further towards the lights , as it is too far up the road and gets next to no use. Apparently pedestrians still continue to use the traffic lights , the same ones the bridge was built to take people away from in the beginning.

    Great work Town Planning...

The only real issue with this I guess is that a great deal of the money is going to China for the materials etc so that would drop the available tax

the biggest problem with gov't contracts is the assigning of the contract to those in the boys club with the secret handshake !! kickbacks all round and fuck the peasants whose money we are spending

And just like everything else this government builds will be built under capacity, lack of planning in general/for the future, over budget, lack of transport options and even if built on time its a just a soft opening with more work to be done (political stunt).

If the current state government were a business it'd be a shitty one. Sad they got the 'contract', but you can't beat that brand loyalty. Pub healthcare is a clusterfuck in general.

A 1.5m x 1m gyprock sheet on level nine fell about 9 metres before hitting a balustrade and smashing into pieces at the Children's Hospital
A John Holland spokeswoman said the plasterboard was damaged during severe weather on Sunday night.
“John Holland inspected the hospital building on Monday morning and had set up a number of small exclusion zones where water ingress was sighted,” she said.
“The plasterboard fell from an area where water damage occurred.
“An industrial hygienist had conducted tests to also check for any other areas of water damage beyond what could be seen. Results of these tests are pending.
The spokeswoman said no one was injured.
“All appropriate safety regulators have been notified and exclusion zones remain in place,” she said.

Are we still outraged at the government and conveniently ignoring JHG's role in all this still?

Just so I can keep up.
