Last report I read on it (2012?) was that 70% of containers go to four suburbs Bibra Lake, North Freo, Welshpool and Kewdale.

If rail was used for three of those suburbs, which already have rail running very close would the truck movements near Freo reduce?

Or do the drivers in the government prefer to let truck movements increase because the feds pay for the roads with our taxes and this holds the local morons in good light for re-election?
Your not involved in transport obviously? Correct most containers go to these suburbs.. Where do you think all the transport yards are? They all get redistributed from the yards as the name of the game is clear the wharf. Then they use every other road in perth to get to where they need to be!!
Edit: I can tell you 2 of those suburbs are serviced by the train( the only train) controlled by one transport company. They train containers from freo to kewdale then truck deliver to canningvale.. Double dip on transport!! The cost of what you are buying just went up! The train is affixed cost whether it has 50 or 2 containers on it in either direction. The problem is the buisness you are delivering to they all want their freight yesterday so by not using the train they get their freight 2 days earlier! Fact.

So they are rorting the system (double dipping)?

What else are they capable of?

There is not a Port in the world that is rail handled.
Unloading and reloading is worked out before the Ship arrives.
A crane may take two lifts off and 3 on. Then move.
A train can't be marshalled in such a way to make it workable.
It is a major task to get a train to reverse 300mm.
No Port can afford the area that needs to be used for marshalling a train.
The Chinese built a new Container port in the ocean, a man made island.
It has a bridge. It is used by trucks. Not a train insight.

    It is all economics.
When the QLD coal mines buy a new shovel we would put in a price for 140 trailers.
    Some Oversize but most not.
Within those trailers there would be several containers.
We can drag the entire shovel from Freo to QLD cheaper than the mine paying for a ship to dock in Brisbane and unload there and go 400kms inland.
It is all about Port fees.
    Could they train the equipment.
    "Yes"
Trucked to Forrestfield. Unloaded and reloaded. Damage.
Eventually the equipment arrives in QLD.
Unloaded and reloaded on a truck. More damage.
We leave here they have it in 3 to 4 days.
On a train? Probably closer to 2 weeks.
They can't do Oversize on trains either.
A lot of containers coming onto Freo are just that.

    Motorcycle Freo to Auckland $1200
Same Motorcycle Auckland to Brisbane $2200
    Auckland to Sydne $1800
    Auckland to Melbourne $1700
    Auckland to Freo $1200

Not a case of rorting the system your using 2 diffrent modes of transport whom both need to be paid for their services. You don't work for free do you? It still has been proven that road transport is more reliable and cheaper in the long run than rail. Everytime a train derails in summer on the east west line who comes to the rescue another train or road transport?
Fact is road transport off our port is the best option, years ago the port was probably in the ideal location as the population has grown maybe now another option is needed port wise but that won't happen for a very long time so another solution is required. Unfortunately the suburb I live and yours the shops you buy from, the roads you use, were once all bush and home to furry creatures which now have moved on . Urban sprawl will continue like it or not as we are at he top of the food chain humans will win always and we are our own worst enemy when it comes to that.

When they do those costings, do they factor in the road maintenance or leave it out as it is taxpayer funded?

Building a road through some bush, meh, has to be done at times.

As I said originally this appears to me to be an appeasement move for the transport and industry in general and a look at how tuff we are from the gubmint getting on the "anti-leftie" bandwagon and nothing more.

Also we are not top of the food chain. But that is another argument.

    Yes it is.
    It is called licensing fees.
Your truck isn't licensed for $600.00/year.

    I don't have a truck???

I'm tipping it does not cover the road costs either.

Yeah I know shit will be dearer, blah, blah, truckies carry the country but your industry is protected by vested interests whether you like to admit it or not.

I reckon 9k a year for the prime mover and 1.5k per trailer and Dolly covers your share as well.

You say that like balance is a bad thing?

I have seen enough bending of process and some breaking of it in my time to realise that government and big business is not squeaky clean and can be very self serving but keep living in your righteous world where you are safe and one side is always correct.

Anyway need to get to bed early to get down to Beeliar tomorrow to protest. See you there?

I suppose I should add permit costs on that too.
You can't Tow more than one without Double or Train permits.
    Then the Oversize permits.
Considering you get anything for them other than 'permission'.

Urban sprawl only continues because we have stubborn people that don't want to accept change. Guess which city has the largest urban sprawl in THE WORLD ? Hint: It's Perth. I don't see humans winning much at the moment, unless there's some competition for who can wipe our their habitat the fastest. We're doing great in that one

Your attitude is the problem. Roads are not the solution, and unless you and everybody else in this shit-hole city realises that we will continue to devolve until our entire landscape is concrete and bitumen. The whole 'solution' to transport is to just band-aid one area and move the problem to another suburb. Why would that occur ? Oh yeah, because we're governed by people who look out for their mates back pocket and don't give a fuck about much else. If it went past your suburb, I bet you'd be against it too
