ALWTK- The Derek Ball of Car mechanics

    Hey guys,

Im looking for a mechanic. Derek Ball has been my go to guy for my bike. He is honest, tells me exactly what does/doesnt need to be done, and explains things in words I actually understand. Sometimes he even lets me look in on what hes doing to to my girl.

Unfortunately, my other form of transportation, is lacking in love and TLC. I cant help that 4 wheels is just 2 wheels too many.
Shes an older girl (2001 hyundai coupe), and is your run of the mill neglected uni student car. She is still going strong even though its been 3years of no servicing, and occasional oil changes (rarely). God knows how she hasnt blown up yet.

point is, with Christma and all that, Ive got some spare cash to fix her up. What I'm worried about is taking it to a mechanic who goes " 20 something year old female who knows jack shit about cars and has a bomb, time to rake some money in ".

Do i really need my headlight fluid changed?? (that's a joke ).

I know she has an oil leak, but basically I just need someone to point out whats the priority in getting changed/fixed, rather than the not so important stuff. Bascially, just need a good, honest, non rippy off car mechanic.

Im NOR but will travel for the right person.

Thanks guys and happy new year!

Ryders Auto Centre, Abernethy Rd Belmont.

Family business for over 30 years or so, we take all our vehicles there (four) that are not locked into other places.

They are on holidays until the 9th Jan I think.

Explain to Sandy what you are after and tell her I recommended them (see pm).

Bias here but my Dad and brother run a family shop, Vince Favazzo Mechanical Repairs in Hamilton Hill (slightly south of Freo). A good chunk of their clients are older people and uni students and they work more on the basis of creating a good relationship with the customer so you come back, rather than going to a big chain auto shop and getting things that don't need doing done etc.

If it hasn't been serviced, get that done and the brakes checked ASAP they are the two big ticket items that can lead to bigger problems.

How much d'you reckon the car is worth? Looks like they can go for as little as $1,000, condition dependent. And how much are you wanting to spend on it?

The car is worth not much, my life however, is worth a little bit.

I'm aware it will cost a lot to fix her up, but to find another bullet proof car for 1k, It'll probably worth getting her remotely roadworthy.

EDIT: in terms of use, I use my bike as my commuter/main form of transport. Hence why she gets all the attention. Poor car is only used for grocery shopping and taking the dog places. maybe taken out once a week.

They don't really have loan cars but if you are nearby they may be able to drop you back at work/drop the car off. They are back at work next week

If you take her to a shop and ask them to "fix her up" and "get her roadworthy", you may end up with a sizeable bill.

I have no idea what condition it's in, it may well be worth doing. But if it needs tyres, brakes, timing belt and engine service and some other things, and it's a high mileage example with a time bomb head gasket, you may want to consider putting the money aside for a replacement instead.

A better approach would be to ask them for a report and quote, so you can make an informed decision before proceeding with repairs.

My advice - find a mate to help you change the fluids (really easy), make sure your brakes work and tyres have tread. I wouldn't worry about too much else on a car worse that much.

Run it into the ground and in the meantime save for a newer little buzz box.

Hyundais can easily do 300,000kms as long as the fluids are changed.

I prefer to do my own work though

I used Ryder's today for the Mrs car.. intial feedback, and the 2 phone calls I had, I plan to book in my car in a couple of week time to follow.
I felt like I had honest feedback but realistic. (ie battery is on it's way out, but up to me rather than pushing it on me; along with a few suggestions to keep an eye on)

    That sounds like them.

May be slightly dearer than the usual local mechanic but cheaper than the dealers, thorough and up front.

Very professional for a family company, Mum, Dad, Son and one other mechanic.
