I'm a sparky as well. Was working for the state government. They privatised us and within 6 months the whole thing went to shit so back in June 2016 I found myself out of work.

At the time, I called the ETU and they said there was 200-300 sparkies out of work in WA and things weren't going to improve for at least 12 months. In 3 months I applied for at least 100 positions but didn't hear anything back.

September arrived and I just said fuck it, and moved to Melbourne. 5 offers for interviews in the first fortnight I was here, took one of the jobs and now work at Melbourne airport.

Hopefully the situation has improved in WA and you won't be out of work long, but unemployment in the state is now at 6.9%.

Try Kentz (through this forum, Darwin work. FIFO) that may still be looking and Eureka recruiting (they were advertising Wheatstone a few days ago)
TEC services for a project in Port Hedland. (Don't know if they are recruiting yet but shouldn't be too far away).

I know the pain, I'm a 4th year apprentice made redundant and only hope looks like Melbourne/Sydney, pretty much everywhere but Perth. Called 20-30 companies here, even applied with EGT. Nothing. Applied for a few jobs on SEEK, called ~15 local businesses in Melbourne/Adelaide, 4 had said they're actively looking.

Sydney is apparently where things are happening. I was in my first year being qualified and no one would give me a look in, too many experienced sparkies willing to be employed as casuals on very average money in Perth. They don't have a choice really. As I said above, I had to move to Melbourne last September. I think if I was still in Perth I'd probably still be unemployed.

O yeah, I think we`ve got tough times over here. When I moved to Perth 2003, the life over here was 10 times better, then nowadays. Any way, good luck to you.

I understand why they have to, but in the long run it's going to drive wages down as employers continue to take the piss.

The wages...yeh whatever...what really pisses me off is the casualisation of the workforce.

Something I've found is the ETU is a lot stronger in Victoria. In WA I found them to be a toothless tiger.

This is why, after 30 years as an electrician in WA, I've pulled the pin on the industry.
I wish I had a contact for the out of work apprentice above but just about all the decent people I knew have left the industry as well...

I was in the same boat ~15 years ago as a cabinetmaker, highly qualified in all aspects including solid timber work, synthetic benchtop fabrication and shopfitting and I was getting better money just doing install work on site and even that wasn't brilliant
All the builders were pushing down wages/cutting subbies rates and not bothering about training apprentices so a lot of good tradespeople including myself said fuck this got out of the industry
Issues with my back, new kid etc didn't help when I was busting my arse for fuckall

Fast forward a few years and the building industry started to go gangbusters and suddenly all the builders are screaming that they can't get decent tradies and are using any dropkick that can screw a box together and having to pay them top dollar for shit work and the customers are going WTF as they were getting charged big $ for shit quality work It wasn't just cabinetmakers either but brickies/roofers etc as well

I was doing jobs on the side in between shifts for a while but eventually even gave that up as I could make the same money for less effort by doing an OT shift at work

Shortage of quality trades only going to get worse.

No kid wants to do a trade, and high school (when I graduated in 2004) is a "uni or loser" approach.
