MV Agusta F4R MY2012 Tail Light Issue

Hi guys, been away for a while and my beautiful bike has been languishing under a cover for the best part of a year as I never got around to fixing this persistent tail light issue I've been having.

Maybe some people would find the diagnosis helpful though I still need some help with options to fix so please read on.

    Problem: No tail light.
Diagnosis: No ignition either, shit. Replace the battery... try again... Both brakes activate the brake lights so I eventually pulled off all the cowlings and narrowed down the wiring to the ignition barrel. Specifically a cluster of wires coming from the bottom...
Solution: It seems to work if I put some pressure on the wires so maybe I can just zip tie them tight so it works up until my next service. In my meagre experience those units don't have quick connectors so going through the process of removing the barrel worries me that I might break it even more without fixing it.

Has anyone had a similar problem and/or has any idea the best way to solve it?

    Thanks

Ps. Can't get images to upload so the link is for imgur. Someone can embed them if they know how.

Take it to the experts if you are not confident eliminating potential causes. It does sound a lot like a connector/connection issue. Pin pushed out of the plug maybe.

Hi Roy, I did have a few electrical issues with my F3. The tail light issue was a bit embarrassing as it turns out the globe was lose in the holder causing it to flicker and annoy those following me.
I did have other problems with solder connections and some chaffing within the harness.
These issues were difficult to track down as they were intermittent.

Good luck with your bike Not-So-Rad

    Inb4TurboR1: It's an MV.

Seriously though, Corse motorcycles know their stuff and are an MV dealer now. They will be able to help.
Hopefully it's not too expensive like replacing the entire harness.

I took it to corse for my last service however they couldn't figure out what the issue was. Now I figured it out I was going to go the extra mile and fix it myself. It seems I won't be able to open the key barrel up so I'll keep my bush mechanic solution until I take it back in next time.

In all honesty wiring issues are a bit of my specialty and I can nut most things out.

Now despite you having an MV you'll have to put up with me bitching about it for the most part. If you can handle that part of it I may be able to help.

    Make sure it's insured....

Italian bikes and electrics have a habbit of being rather flammable.

Never saw this. Thanks man! So my solution at the moment is to use zip ties to make sure there is no pressure on the wires coming out of the key barrel. It's totally functional now.

I'll just leave it until it's next service and get the whole thing replaced/fixed. I can't see an easy way to dissasemble the ignition barrel without pulling the bars or half the front off so the zip ties are an acceptable effort vs reward solution at the moment!

Mainly I'm glad I know exactly where the problem is so I can fix it on the fly if I need.

Don't get your hopes up... MV's solution will probably be identical, except you need to pay for MV branded cable ties than need to be ordered and come from Italy with an 8-16 week wait and cost $400 + another $1200 to install.

I'm not sure that would help the connections...

Sorry I don't understand? What is the intended purpose of putting water displacer in the key barrel?

Always appreciate tips whatever they are.
