    O'Callaghan on speeding motorcycles

THOUSANDS of motorcyclists are getting away with speeding in Western Australia because police cameras can't identify number plates or riders wearing helmets.

Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan says owner onus laws are needed so motorbike owners would have to pay for fines linked to their bikes unless they could prove someone else was riding it at the time.

    That's a good read.
Unfortunately it reads, "The Government I represent is loosing money."
    Nothing else.
He seems to be grasping at straws to convince the poor victimised Cagers there is a correlation between speed cameras and road safety.

I think people here have so far underestimated the influence and immediate outcome of this article to us as motorcyclists. Let me paraphrase it for you:

"Motorcyclists get away with things you can't get away with. And while you have to pay fines for speeding, they don't. We, the police, are powerless against them."

Now, what do you suppose this is going to incite from the WA Public, who all agree the police will/can do nothing

Be wary of the next cager who reads PerthNow and represents the average "terk er jerbs" intellect of the WA public.

I wonder if the report is accurate from Perth Now.

i blame the government for this out rage!

why allow motorcycles to be sold for the street that can do 299kph and break the nation limit in 1st gear, ban motorcycles & ban any kids under 16 from riding a dirt bike and make all ATVs have compulsory roll cages & seat belts!

Come one now, we don't get away with much in this fun vibe killing nanny country anymore and hooking through front facing speed cameras is the last piece of rebellion we have left #Savethebikerrebellion

Yep, the only people who can really still get away with it are drivers of company cars.

But they shouldn't be, all cars should be assigned to someone; and most employees in a company would need to 'book' the company car if they needed to use it, someone does know who was driving it, it's just a cop out

Reading the article it refers to missed opportunities from rear-facers. From the article:

"Officers currently have to identify riders before they can be fined, leading to 2000 infringements being written off last year because the motorcycles were photographed from behind.
"Motorcycle number plates are missed by the cameras because they're small, they're bent up, they're not at the right angle - there's a whole lot of complications," Mr O'Callaghan said on Thursday."

I bet they get that same issue with a lot of cars too - dirty/bent/damaged/missing/covered number plates...

Oh, and none of those issues ever occurred on any fine I've received from a rear facer lol. The pictures on fines I've received are perfectly within the box and clear as day!! I must be doing it wrong!!

It happens. I was working up north earlier this year when one of 10 minions copped an offence. Log book disappeared.

    Naughty minion.

Yes and no, depends on the Co and vehicle, if it's allocated to a specific person like a sales rep etc then yes but when I worked in the building industry a lot of the time I'd drive the work ute but some days it was driven by others and some days several people may drive it at various times if we were out on a job and given it can be over a month before an infringement comes out it can be difficult working out for certain who it was

That doesn't make sense, IF they can't read the plate because it's bent etc then it makes no difference whether they can identify the rider or are they suggesting we all ride without helmets? Not that it would help with a rear facer

They also fail to mention that things like tow balls/tyre racks/bike racks etc obstruct plates on cars all the time but they don't seem to mention that or think it's an issue Just another beat up IMO

It may be a "beat up" But 'Inspector Karl' is under pressure to 'reduce the road toll' ( remove the perceived lack of police numbers ) in area's where "speed is an issue"

To that end he will "target specific minority groups" who "are not being over policed at the moment" but " will bear the brunt of officers redirected to increase the benefits of scale.."

That is to place fines on as many ( motorcyclists) as possible. The end result.... status quo....restored; Less riders down and fairies at the end of the garden ... YAH !!! for WAPOL....
