    Got a mate who used to be a traffic cop and in his words, it's a clusterfuck.

    By the letter of the law, if you pas a vehicle in the same lane on the right, you can do so at any speed provided it is safe to do so.

    You can only pass a vehicle in the same lane on the left, if that vehicle is stationary.

    He also said (as has been said above) that some coppers are c*nts and will try and have a crack and book you on something. Others may just have a word with you and a 'be safe mate' msg, and others still will let it slide.

    His rule of thumb, do it when traffic is crawling or stopped - no worries. Do it at 80km/h they'll get you

    Just ask yourself, "What's the worst thing that can happen here."
    If its going under the wheels of a cement mixer at 80kmh... don't do it.
    If its flicking the review mirror of some ponce in a Peugeot... do it.

    that is a good point agrid

    i split up & down great eastern highway all day every day, mainly because of the idiots who think they have the right to sit just under the limit all the way from midland to mundaring in the right hand lane. so i enjoy blowing their doors off. However my number one rule is never split when there is a bus, BGC truck or basically anything bigger than a 200 series

    This is why I haven't really tried filtering yet, newly licenced and I think my skills are quite good enough to comfortably filter yet. Would rather not hit someones car due to my lack of skill and experience.

    I was the same but I was stuck in traffic on charles street one day and just went fuck it - now or never, haven't looked back and only hit one car mirror so far!

    Edit: To be serious, if you split with a large speed differential, don't be surprised when someone decides to fuck up your day.

    Splitting can be safe, it just has to be done with some "care and attention"...

    bike cop pulled me over this morning, i split he didnt.. only caught me because there was a over size going up the hill

    blah blah blah tail light this, indicators need to be 300mm that. license plate angle is only just legal etc... i was like do you want to borrow my protractor mate? he asked why i didn't indicate while splitting "i don't indicate while splitting and never will, its a pointless action.. i can not be flicking indicators left & right while trying to avoid mirrors n such"

    he did not like this but i still managed to get away with no fines and no sticker on the motard

    Same, on the freeway I'm normally slaloming the lines, flicking the indicator to move 20cm left or right is pointless.

    I was passing stationary vehicles which were on my left in a single lane (I was between driver's side and dashed line), driver decided to not check her rear view mirror and smash it out flicking the indicator on so I swerved around (was going 30-40) trying to not t-bone her, she ended up driving into my side.

    Two torn ligaments later, I got blamed for the accident because it's apparently illegal and here we are.

    I think filtering is generally limited to double lanes for legality.

    yeah double lanes, with single lanes you have to do it extra quick no they dont have time to fuck you up "blow the doors off"

    Taken to this new technique with great enjoyment no more sitting in queses at first kinda slow but now splitting at around 100 kays not sure of the rules however indicating seems pointless what are the rules for the solid line foot should not cross etc also what side of car etc.

    Never had a problem with Police pulling me over for lane splitting. I even followed a police bike that was lane splitting once and nothing.

    I think as long as the traffic is stationary and one is splitting slowly say 40kph and there is a big gap its fine.

    I was lane splitting up the freeway a few weeks ago, and whilst I was splitting, some dude on an R1 overtook me, whilst we were both splitting traffic.

    Was super pissed.
