Quads? The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

    Ok PSBers.
I have friends chasing a Quad for their young teenagers.
They called me for advice. Imagine that?
They have fucking 4 wheels! I'm not bloody interested.
I look at them all with contempt.
I would like to know what users would recommend. Not Racing Quads.
I would also like info on what to stay away from.
    Go for it.
    TIA.

First question is why are they interested in a quad?
If the answer is to learn or it's 'safer' than two wheels then steer them clear and beat your head into the wall as you try and explain they are more dangerous and will hold the kid back from learning.

If for a farm where their function is legitimate, then quite obviously avoid anything Chinese. Honda Big Reds are awesome. Can Am/BRP if you've got money to burn.

They came out with us last weekend. The kids took to the Quads like ducks to water.
They would like a Quad of their own.

Gotta teach the kids to bail out on the high side if something goes wrong. Which it does...

long story short like most things if you want minimal hassles get the good stuff or they will be forever fixing annoying little problems

my trx300 farm quad gets abuse while intoxicated adventuring in the bush then parked up for months at a time under a tarp in the rain and still loves starting first go

yeah ATV's are nearly the number one reason for ER visits, death traps if you dont ride them the way they need to be which is all backwards

These are for a 9 and 12 year old girls. I dont think they went more than 5kph on them last week and just lapped the camp site.
Anything from the big jap companies and you cant go wrong really. Quads make a bit of a jump there is 50cc ones then a couple 90's before jumping to 350cc and up.

Slow quads can be a good entry to bikes for kids without the complications of a 2 wheeler learning curve.

Our eldest was put off bikes for life when at 5 her first ride was our PW80. Hit a bump, lost the pegs and rolled on full throttle as she was dragged straight into a tree. Quick little thing that bike.

Dad fail. Bike needed a throttle stop for learning.

out of the jap 90's, Raptor 90 is the only one with reverse and has the best/widest suspension. Is also one of the cheaper jap 90's (although it may be made in Thailand???). The Honda trx90 is semi manual, so goes a little better, handles a little worse. Next step up is a can am ds90 full manual, widetrack etc. We are now looking for a raptor 125 in good nick. Yamaha used to do a full range of 4 and 2 strokes, but stopped bringing all of them in about 5 years ago iirc. Now there is nothing sport/fun based between kids 90's and the racing 450's.

My sons learnt to drive in a quad on their grandfathers 20 acres on the south coast while learning to ride a motorcycle there as well.

Bit overpowered but the Rodeo 3.2lt V6 gave them a good grounding in vehicle control. Excellent quad.
