    No, I think you're right.

Note that they say he smashed the record, not that he set a new one.
    Semantics - but relevant.

That's why they refer to JL and MM's laps as 'fastest' or similar, and don't use the word "record".

It think it has to be set on a race weekend, and specifically be QUALIFYING or RACE designation.
Pretty sure the FP sessions don't count either.

Could also be due to fairness - as testing in Sepang doesn't occur at the same time of year as the race - so not apples -> apples.

    I could be wrong though.

MM's "fastest lap" in 2015 with which you are comparing it, is not an official record.

I'm having trouble finding the actual record time though...

I'm reading that Hondas race pace was pretty insane. Marauez didn't bother trying to set a fast lap either. Said that he preferres to use testing to test and he doesn't need to see his name at the top o the sheets.

Lorenzos lap isn't an official lap time either. It's just like Marquez's from 2015.

p4p1 That's why they didn't say that Lorenzo set a record.

    They said he smashed one.

You run 100m in 10 seconds during an official race and set a record.
Let's say that's Pedrosa in Qually last year.

I run 100m in 7 seconds down at the same park - running to catch Mr Whippy. I smashed your record, but it doesn't count for shit.
    Let's say that's Lorenzo.

Then someone comes up to me and says, "shiiiit, you're fast as bro, but Jono (Let's say that's Marquez) did a 7.1 the other day running away from the cops.
You're not much quicker than him, but you both smashed that slow arsed record.
    Shame they don't count eh?"

Would there be more grip on the track on the last day of a test with all bike doing 50+ laps leaving rubber over the previous 2 days?

I think that's Chews point though he didn't really smash one as the record in similar conditions was 0.037s slower.

    Possible.
Can't think it would be much different to a race weekend though. :/

These are the times from 2015 at Sepang (race weekend)

    Pole lap - Pedrosa - 1'59.053
    Fastest lap - Lorenzo - 2'00.606
    Circuit lap record - Lorenzo - 2'00.606
    Best lap - Pedrosa - 1'59.053

Even there, you can see that Lorenzo has the record, even though Pedrosa went quicker at some point (I have no idea how that works).

    If that's the case:
    Record 2'00.606
    Lorenzo's time 1'58.830

    That's smashed. Amirite?

Or am I getting something wrong?

All I'm saying, is they're comparing Lorenzo's UNofficial time, to an official record.

GP One analysed the race pace of the riders on the last day of the test and if it had been an actual race (battling aside) the winner would have been Marquez, with Dovi and Pedrosa battling for second. Jack Miller in 4th and Lorenzo in 5th.

Edit: Times were based on the rider's race simulations and not their overall laps on the day.

Marquez, Pedrosa and Crutchlow seem rather relaxed don't they? No major complaints about any aspect of the bikes, just fine tuning required. Unlike the last few years.

    Ominous signs for the competition.........

But unless the bike is set up in race mode the actual times mean nothing expect to those in the know.
Mthey may be experimenting with different tyres or fuel weight or a particular computer setting

That's sort of how I took it, not really smashing anything after 3 years with improvements in engines/aero/tyres etc

I should have mentioned that the times were based on the team's race simulations (multiple continuous laps) and NOT an average of all their laps.

For example, Marquez did a race simulation of 15 laps and was lapping 0.5 seconds quicker per lap than Jorge Lorenzo's 8 lap race simulation (which was cut short due to tech problems).

They're saying the engine is a little aggressive. The front fairing they don't think is quiet right either but they all seem very happy.

MotoGP to keep grid girls, not following F1's lead.

To be honest I've always found the concept of grid girls a bit strange, especially getting photos with them...they're paid to be nice to you. Under any normal circumstance the woman wouldn't let you touch her.

There's an argument it adds some 'glamour' to sports. Most of the time I just feel sorry for them, especially in the rounds with cold weather standing out there holding an umbrella freezing their tits off...and let's be honest, there's nothing glamorous about holding an umbrella for Tito Rabat or Loris Baz.

Do I want grid girls banned? No. Do I care if they are... not in the slightest. I'm there to watch bikes go fast!

What I'd like to see adopted? Let a fan hold the umbrella for a rider on the grid.
