NWTK Linkedin Burn it with fire or actually useful?

I signed up a while ago as i was looking for work at the time but never really did much with it, the problem is with each successive piece of employment my skills have become more specalised and obscure. To the point the 20year of HR type has no hope of understanding the words on the CV and inevitably they won't actually match what they are looking for. I've tried to stay away from faceplant tweeter etc etc so is linkedin in simply the same in a suit pretending to be actually useful but really about gathering data to sell people crap they probably don't need or is there and actual benefit to participants discuss!

If you're into the wank then keeping in touch with your network can be handy if you find yourself "searching for opportunities outside your current role"
Don't treat it like social media and stick to the facts and I personally can't see the harm in it. Assuming of course that you have a work history that you are pleased to advertise.

Just do it. Seriously, if you look up the standing rules of PSB it goes something like this.

    1. Dont be a dick
    2. Desmo is allowed to be a dick (sometimes)
    3. Buy the one with the most Duke
    4. Dont ask about fixing the search function.
    etc etc..

I dont think linkedin knows what it is either, networking, sales opportunities, employment site its all and none at the same time. it always stuck me as people posting their cvs, one thing i would say if you have a network of your customer base make sure you are careful of who you share it with and how, i get many requests from east coast suppliers to get a free leg up from the local yokel.

Same as above, IMO, the dudes with most presence on there are the ones that are found wanting in the real world.

Having said that, I think it is still worth having your name up here, please keep it real, otherwise it becomes another f'book fantasy scene.

Reason being it's just in case the usual HR type decide to go down this rabbit hole, you know HR types right?

It's basically a way of making publicly available personal information that if you normally made public numerous people would smack you around the back of the head for doing so.

I use it because if someone between me and a job Google's my name, I want to have some control over what they see. I've been throwing out some job applications recently and LinkedIn tells me that people from most of those companies have recently viewed my profile. Use it for what it is... A wanky HR resource they assign some importance to.

When I worked in London project managing it was essential for figuring out who I was just invited to attend a meeting with. Nothing worse that arriving unprepared due to not realising who the audience is (i.e. is there a stakeholder in the room).
I've only ever accepted invites from people I have actually worked with, it's not fucken Facebook.
In Perth it's a bit meh, my role has changed and the likelihood of sitting in a room with 25+ strangers has all but gone.
Never forget with LinkedIn you're the product.

Like some academic social media sites (Researchgate, Google Scholar...) it needs constant cultivation, otherwise people will see out of date information and think you are a low achiever.

A manager at the company I work at once claimed he wouldn't hire someone without a LinkedIN page. Even if the words are meaningless, you can find out mutual contacts and then get in touch with them and ask what the person is like. As is typical face-to-face info accounts for a lot more than what's written.
It's a networking site plain and simple, most of the jobs in my Industry are never advertised, it's all about someone who know's someone that's working there and heard they were looking for people ... or you get head hunted by recruiting agencies. YMMV

My dad retired last month but had been a geologist for 45 years. Through Link'd in he regularly had former colleagues he hadn't seen in years contacting him with job offers right up until he retired.

It's cute that you think hr has the smarts to assume that. I bet you also think if hr see you don't have facebook, they assume it's because you prefer interacting with people in person and have better things to do with your life

So vaguely useful populated by the sort of people who get distracted by shiny things and incapable of independent thought in other words the average HR professional. Looks like i should put a bit of time into it work are only giving out 12month contacts under protest currently.
