this makes me even more believe the Zuma satellite is up there spying away, they seem to have every thing pretty sorted

people say northrop grumman made a shit deploy device & it was lost but being a top secret military satellite that's what they would want other countries to believe

Ran out of juice. Couldn't complete the re-entry burn.

Did it hit the drone ship or the water at 300mph?

When watching before the feed was cut off, image went from the deck to what looked like BOOM happening for about 1 sec.

Deck where the camera was getting instantly overcome by smoke/water haze.

Someone has the footage of it hitting the drone ship. That'd be great to see.

Sounds like Musk said it took out "2 of the engines on the drone ship?" after hitting the water at 300mph.

The payload made it into orbit.

The engines are designed to be reusable.

Both 1st stage engines landed back at Cape Canaveral.

2nd stage was supposed to land on a barge.

For whatever reason it got close to the mark but hit the barge or the water at 300mph.

My understanding is the payload is hanging around in the most radioactive part of our atmosphere and if it's still working will complete another burn sending it to a Mars orbit.

The idiot comment was about the joke? Jk was funny but if 300kph in WA not only impound but a serve of the slipper and Jail time for sure.

Yeah what I heard could be a misunderstanding of whether it was the landing engines or the drone engines he was talking about. I be deaf.

Can't wait to see whatever footage they have of the stage 2 coming down.

Looks like the red roadster is going to over-shoot the red planet by quite some way

    Asteroid belt now.

Seemed like the 3rd stage was just an afterthought.

As long as it goes somewhere.

The 2 landing in sync... it was stunning

Why didn't the car's tyres burst in space?

My my science may be wrong, but by taking the tyres into space all you are doing is removing 1 atmosphere's worth of external pressure... ie about 15psi at sea level... so even if the tyres were inflated to 35psi before leaving the earth, the equivalent up there is 50psi

You would think (hope!!) a fair bit of work went into prepping the car for a safe launch and interstellar travel. Tyres filled with foam, washer bottle filled up, driver bolted in not just relying on 60's technology seatbelt, batteries removed, aircon turned off, Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack uploaded to the stereo.....

People are already poo-pooing the decision to launch the car rather than a more "sensible" payload - conveniently forgetting the likelyhood of the whole thing going bang - but imagery of that space-suited figure in a convertible suddenly being lit by Sun and Earth-light as the fairing parted company, and then slowly tumbling slowly in a high Earth orbit is going to be iconic. Stills of that are surely becoming desktop wallpapers as we speak/type.
