    Passing cyclists, 1m law

    https://www.rsc.wa.gov.au/Road-Rules/Browse/Cyclists

What does it mean for us motobike riders. We can lane share, ride two in a lane, pass cyclists in a safe manner in the same lane, but the distance between would be less than a 1m. Also convenient how everything has a price now, must be good business policing the roads.

Hmmm am I reading this right?

Can ride two side-by-side on the road, with up to 1.5m between riders

So Hale Road busy single road I can see ignorance and arrogance combining for some ordinary interactions and also some fines coming

People are overthinking this law. Bloody carrying on about rulers and tape measures because they've run out of things to be outraged about on PerthNow.

    Think of it like this:

How would someone who's not a cunt pass a cyclist?

I passed plenty of cyclists in their lane on a weekend ride a couple weeks back. Heaps of room to pass safely.

They have to specify a distance, because if they said 'pass at a safe distance', the word 'safe' is open to interpretation. Is safe 20cm or is safe 2m?

You're not going to get done for passing within 90cm of a cyclist in a 50kph zone. Mostly because there's no way to prove it unless a cop sees you.

But they have to set a distance as there's too many smart asses who like to interpret the law using their year 10 school certificate.

it only became relevant now that there are convenient little fines attached to almost all of these new regulations.

The law was written to cover every vehicle on the road. I think most of us can agree it's not safe for a 3 trailer road train to pass within a metre of a cyclist, but its safe for a scooter. Do you then write a law specifying which vehicles can pass at which distances? Of course not.

Thank the smart asses on the road for these laws. I was on a ride with another PSB member and we came across a couple cyclists riding single file. He purposely went as close as he could at 100kph, pulled in the clutch and hit the rev limiter right next to them.

They were older ladies and the lady in front grabbed the brakes and the cyclist behind went into the back of her.

The majority of people who do the right thing, suffer as a result of the actions of a few.

    Overthinking it ? Tape rulers?

No just physical realities and cunty pushy bikey peeps using the law and mixing with ignorant drivers of cars that will combine to make this a pleasurable experience.

I am all for bike lanes and sharing the road. I haven have bike Lycra in the drawers, but I can just See the latte set making this a bit of a fuck from time to time. I can see a time where I approach 2 pushies in the opposite direction in the hills to be mindful that a car travelling in the same direction will fix on them and then come into my lane to get around them.

So what already happens nearly every weekend usually it's Ducati or BMW riders coming into my lane on a corner nearly taking me out.

Good thing - 99.99% of drivers are now crazy vigilant of cyclists now, The only problem I have seen already thats come from this is cyclists own the road now,

The other day coming home from work had a cyclist in the left hand of the left lane which is all good, but me and every other car had to pull into the right lane to overtake, which means you have to slow down to not hit them and wait until its safe to pull over so you dont have any cars hit you from the rear - like a normal person, the problem is every time there is a set of lights the same cyclist will go merrily up to the front and make every car have to slow down and repeat this process, shouldnt they have introduced a law that prevents them from undertaking especially at a set of lights/intersection so they dont disrupt the flow of traffic?

It is already legal for them to ride on the footpath. They want the road though...

Were going to have more lycra warriors posting up vehicles getting too close when its a perfectly fine pass or not in the cycle path like the recent one on TV in QLD.

Only applies to bicycles not MC's, effectively a MC becomes a car when passing a bicycle

Just don't run them over or sideswipe them and you will probably be O.K.

How often do you see a patrol car or paddy wagon any way?

Left Kalamunda on the Weir rd yesterday, coming in the opposite direction was a pack of cyclists happily holding up a shit load of traffic. Wankers!

How are cyclists different to the school bus going up Mundaring Weir/Alderside Road. It creeps along at about 40km/h and it would be hard to overtake in a car on many sections of that road. Should school buses be forced onto the pavement so that you can get where you're going slightly quicker?

Just chill out, being slowed-down isn't the end of the world and it's someone's life that this law is designed to protect.
When due process fails us, we really do live in a world of terror. ó JC Denton
