    Computers

    Hi all

I havenít bought a new computer in a long time.. whatís the go these days??

Looking for a desktop/monitor..around the $1000 price range that can do mundane office kinda stuff but also some gaming too??

Am I best off just buying one for around that price at JB hifi or are there better value companies around?

Iím not clever enough to buy separate parts and make one myself..thanks

There's a guy NOR I used who build mine, spent 1400 for a decent digital processing / gaming spec, more than does the trick for me (not a serious gamer), handles my web design and playing about with cad, including a basic lcd screen..

Also got a quote of PLE for a similar spec for around 1600.

This ^^, I'm no computer whizz but the last 2 computers were built up by my partners brother in law in Adelaide, they were pretty decent spec and the last one is probably mid/hi spec as far as MB/CPU/GPU etc and that ended up at around $1400 just for the box nothing else
Unless you can build it yourself or know someone who can then anything really flash will cost a bit, for basic stuff usually an "off the rack" job is more cost effective especially as they can do packages of PC/Screen/ etc

    PLE, Netplus, Storm Computers....

Big box stores are a ripoff.

all the cheap pre built ones that include a i3 chip, gtx 1050 and 8gb of ram are all going to do everything you want at full hd easily.

at the moment GPUs and ram prices are up to high hell. so building your own will be about the same cost anyway.

Literally any laptop under $1000 will do you fine and it will also be portable if/when you change rooms, get new furniture etc.

    Your config above looks fine

Basically any computer you buy today, no matter how cheap and 'shit', will do most things you need.

I'd probably swap out the 7200HD for a SSD 256 or 512gig for the hundred bux extra

    yep. looks alright.

    - - - Updated - - -

the cpu is a bit weaker than the i3 but unless you are doing serious rendering or video editing then you will be fine.

the gpu and ram do all the gaming work and the gtx 550ti will be fine up till maybe trying to push ultra hd or 140htz refresh and super high graphics quality.

Unless you have kids who need to use a 'family computer' or want to game. Just get a laptop.

The only issue I have with MSY in Balcatta at least is they have nothing on display you can look at, at least PLE has computers/keyboards/mice etc on display
My boy wanted to buy a mechanical keyboard and gaming mouse last year and MSY had nothing to look at whereas PLE did have boards/mice to look at/try so he bought from PLE

The GPU/PSU & RAM is much the same as my PC but we went for 2 x 2TB HDD's in RAID and a Ryzen 5 1600 CPU & Gigabyte AB350M-D3H Motherboard which are much higher grade than those ones For basic stuff and light gaming I'm guessing it'd be OK

    Computers

Just be aware that MSY have had two judgements against them in court for breaches of misleading customers about their rights to returns/repairs etc. They were done the second time last year : https://www.accc.gov.au/media-releas...epresentations

To say the least, their rep in general is not good at all, now with another judgement against them well, better to go with Austin, PLE or netPlus.

Spec wise I would bump the gpu up to a 1070, the 1050 will struggle to pump out decent looking graphics, added to that, the next gen series cards are due soonish, if you can wait a little the current cards will have a price drop and you will have a little head room to play with in your budget and you can add some more money by saving up for a little longer

Was going to mention they had a bad rep for warranties and returns.

Yeh I would only recommend MSY if a) you know exactly what you're looking for and b) don't mind people with less than a 0 in customer service.

I order my parts online, walk in, receive them, and walk out.

If you're browsing or looking for someone to talk to, look elsewhere. The savings are probably not worth the hassle for the regular consumer.

Yeah last time I was on there it was actually had a banner advising as such The good thing is that now they've been hammered a couple of times they should be less likely to pull this shit again Most of the stuff I've gotten from them is just general items like a HDD, USB Hub etc so no big ticket items

To say the least, their rep in general is not good at all, now with another judgement against them well, better to go with Austin, PLE or netPlus.

The only issue I guess is that a 1070 is twice the price of the 1050 and really blows out the cost of the computer even further given the original ~$1000 estimate, as a 1070 is nearly that much alone
