    Changes to the Australian Road Rules

    Found this article on Facebook today, outlining some new changes to the Australian road rules, for motorbikes the changes mainly involve helmet mounted cameras, lane filtering and a few others..

    Looks like the changes are for the better and help clarify a lot of the grey areas

    Yup, making grey areas clear isn't always a good thing. In what would probably be over 200,000km I have never been done for lane splitting. There is the 30km thing but also states if it's deemed unsafe; plod just has to state either clause and there's no comeback other than a he said/she said court appearance. Nevertheless, I will continue splitting the way I always have. Won't change anything for me - just like the 1m rule for cyclists. I always passed at a distance I deemed safe; it was safe then, it is safe now.

    I do welcome the changes to the dark visor, helmet comms/camera, standing on footpegs, taking hand off the bar though.

    Though of course this has to go through the States. 3 levels of bureaucracy is painful, unnecessary and uneconomic.

    I saw some signage last week talking about new slomo laws - 40km/hr past an incident. It's bad enough at normal speed, the rubber neckers will feel even more justified and slow down even more.

    Yup, paying them no heed. Having 3 levels of government stifles forward progression... but in this case I welcome the associated delay with respect to making filtering rules black and white.

    When a 30kph max splitting law comes in, you'll be Sect 60'd if you split at 75.

    Keep that in mind, oh useful idiots, claiming it is a good idea.

    the cops will never be able to prove how fast you where splitting, will just be a excessive splitting speed charge. plus if your doing it right they wont catch you anyway they will be stuck behind the 50 cars you just split lol

    Unless they are on a bike and have noted the traffic doing 40kmh and you are going faster, which also makes you unsafe splitting.

    Can we please have "Hook Turns"? I need a good laugh watching people work those out.

    I'm also pretty content with the gray area of splitting/filtering as it is right now, 6+ years of riding in Perth, past cops, behind moto cops, never been so much as looked at sideways. Best case scenario, these rules become law (eventually...) and the previous situation continues.

    Lane filtering under 30 is fine. On the freeway it becomes overtaking within a lane which is fine anyway (provided you are following normal road rules, like indicating etc)...

    The 'unsafe' rule is just open to interpretation of the officer...

    I find the interpretation of when it is unsafe a difficult one. I have been overtaking cars and splitting since i first got my k class licence in 1978. Back in those days vehicles used to move over for bikes, Nowadays some of them dislike and not acknowledge us riders.

    The question i have is based on the thirty kmh rule. A vehicle travelling at 80 kmh and i overtake him doing a split maneuvre at a 100 kmh am i breaking the law? if so, i have been breaking the law for a long time.

    The point is there was no law/definition. Now there is.
    While they could always state reckless etc., the "unsafe" clause makes it easy for the officer to assign an offence with backing by legislation (once/if enacted).

    Fixed.

    If you are splitting, then yes you will be breaking the law as you are splitting faster than 30 kmh, which is the proposed maximum speed you can split or filter at.

    At the moment you are not if you are on the right hand side of the vehicle in the same lane.
