I preferred the Mk4 to the Mk5 but they are getting harder to find.

As an alternative have look at the Audi S3 which I prefer agian

    Mmmm Audi...

Would like to get my hands on one of their RS4 V8's, It's no BMW M3, but still.

Definitely perfer the MK4 - it's the only one I'd be after The MK5 is definitely improved but it'd be very much a nostalgia purchase!

Not a fan of the Audis personally, although took:

one of those for a test drive again last week and it was a ball.

Looking for a daily driver at the mo, currently trying to choose between something older like the R32, M5 or M6 vs something 2011 and newer eg M3, C63 etc, gutted that the perfect RS4 I found was above what I want to spend in cash but below what is new enough to finance

I drove the RS4 and the M3 before deciding on the RS4 easily, on a year/price direct conparison

The M3 had the handling edge at the limit, but in a normal road car how often are you on the limit?

The AWD absolutely whips the M3 in the wet.

    The RS4:

    exhaust sounds better
The interior looks and feels nicer. The ‘08 M3 looks like a taxi
seats are some of the best on the planet
has won the International Performance Car of the Year title in ‘07 and even Clarkson claims it had one of the best engines ever made (at the time)

Yeah I'd go the Audi RS4 while wanting the BMW M3, but for comfort, real world usability and (probably) lower running/insurance costs added with most not knowing what they are looking at would see less hassle from the Police and swathe of Commodore/Falcon bogans.

What are the S4s/RS4s like for maintenance costs and reliability ?
    Rest in Peace

Ive had mine for 7 years and spent a bit on various modifications so up to about 350kw and despite this nothing has actually broken.

It is however expensive to maintain like most Euros, and it needing 10L of oil. I buy most of my own stuff out of USA/Europe.

Not sure about using as a daily though, I run on 98 and only get 400km from a tank

Rethink the Audi S3. Its the same chassis as the R32 with the main differences being a turbo 4 versus a V6, but the turbo will deliver big gains from some simple mods

    S3 hatch - highly rate
    10L oil!
Is the 4.2 V8 the one with the ridiculous timing chain (both in terms of complexity and replacement cost)

This. The S3 and the Golf R share the same 2.0 turbo 4 with the S3 having a slightly larger intercooler. 169kw up to 220kw is a tune, fuel pump and downpipe. That's why I'm putting one in to my Caddy

The S3 also gains bigger brakes and alloy hubs and carriers for strength and lightness. Which is why I'm having a set delivered today.

Downside is that second hand S3 parts are ex-East whereas Golf parts are everywhere.

The S5 and S4 had the timing chain

My engine is a completely unique design with no belt or chain and run by gears, hence its redline of 8300rpm and Clarkson’s praises. The gears almost sound like its running a supercharger

The RS4 V8 has a belt, on the firewall side of the engine, and it's an engine out job to change.

    Steer clear if it's due.

Only thing I couldn’t gel with in the ra4 was the turn in feeing a little vague.

Preferred the circa 08 rs4 to the similar age m3 but then with 2012 sort of age the c63/m3 pip it a little for me but they’re all very different cars. Leaning towards an e92 but not sure how much I love it over the older rs4 / c63

Rs4 sure does make a nice whail and those recaros are to die for. So bland in the m3
