Is the 4.2 V8 the one with the ridiculous timing chain (both in terms of complexity and replacement cost)
Now my only exposure is to a 98 4.2 (40 valve version) in an A8 however the only timing chains it has are at the back of the heads that run the exhaust cam off intake cam which is driven by a belt at the front of the motor. There would be a fair bit of labour paying someone to do the timing belt as the front of the car has to come off and the A/C been degassed etc. Once you work it out its not hard although there is a bit of time involved. The latter ones you do not need to pull the harmonic balancer which is a bonus, hunting down some of the special tools however makes life a lot easier.

Have started using Swedish autos in osbourne Park after Quattros closed (they retired) and avoid going anywhere near the Audi centre.

I should add if you are looking at odd cars everyone is !@#$scared of the big euro bombers and their fuel bills so if hunting around for something a bit odd and interesting you can pick one for not much , the fuel bill will be comparable to a 6cylinder commodore or falcon. The good thing about a big euro bomber is the kind of person that actually had the kind of money to pay for one in the first place doesn't have much time to actually drive it. So 8-10 years old with relatively low kms is not hard to find.

I took my polo to quattros not long after I got it for a timing belt service
Ended up with a persistent water leak (water pump is replaced as part of the service). If they were still around I wouldn't recommend them.
I then went to ramp to get a tbe, ended up with a huge pos that fell off twice and is now sports hose clamps to stop it falling off again.
In both cases I gave the shops the chance to fix their mistakes, which they couldn't do.
Don't go to galvsport either. After many recommendations they couldn't even do the basics like refit the air cleaner properly. Glad I checked it as it was basically unfiltered air straight through to the turbo.
Find a shop that actually knows what they are doing. For me this is the bikes all over and I try and DIY the lot now.

“Crashing is shit for you, shit for the bike, shit for the mechanics and shit for the set-up,” Checa told me a while back. “It’s a signal that you are heading in the wrong direction. You want to win but crashing is the opposite. It’s like being in France when you want to go to England and when you crash you go to Spain. That way you’ll never get to England!” -- Carlos Checa

We have been using Eliteeuro for a long time to service the Mk5 Golf GTI Pirelli and can only say good things about Joe the owner. He has always looked after us.

Probably pretty handy to commute with, to the office in down town Kabul...
Sventek, being a predominantly lazy fuck can you please purchase some for me, bring me the stuff, create something I want after you think of it for me then clean my house, wash my car, dog, bike breathe for me.

Glad to see a thread like this started. Been looking for one for ages after the success of the bargain bikes thread.

Putting this one in here, even though it's a bike. Not exactly a bargain and the gearbox issue could get very expensive, very quickly.

But hey a Katana, even a small one, is still a Katana.
