My sister was going out with her husband in the early 70's, he and his friends rode, they used to come over all the time, it wasn't till 1977, when a boyfriend had a bike, so why not borrow it and get a licence
I bought the bike off him and dumped the boyfriend

And here the thread goes up in flames...anyway...

One of my cousins let me sit on his BMW when I was 4 years old...i was hooked and got to ride mopeds from the age of 10 at a mates workshop. At 14 I got my first moped, a Kreidler Flory with 3 gears, which was the moped tuners bike of choice...factory 28km/hr. The fastest one got clocked at 125 and the guy got pulled over by the cops. Made the news back then...fun times!

Uncles rode and injured themselves pretty significantly in the 90's , but still rode again upon recovery. Had a little Peewee 50 at the farm that we always rode and enjoyed. When I could finally afford it, wanted a cheap commuter to Uni and back and had a few friends that rode at the time. Then started riding with W@R and PSB for a few years before I started racing. Realistically if it wasn't for the brilliant social aspect of PSB and W@R at the time I might not have started racing, which has kept me involved and interested for the last 17 years.

I guess I'm a little against the grain of other responses here, no one in my family rides, except me. I grew up with "NO YOU ARE NOT GETTING A MOTORBIKE!!!", "They're dangerous", "Not safe", "You'll get hurt or worse", etc. etc. etc. I think mum knew all along it was inevitable, I would absolutely stare at any motorbike in the vicinity and point them out while in the back of the car. Never knew anything about makes or models, just wanted to be on one.

To be fair both my folks, myself, brother and sister are all pretty keen cyclists, or at least were growing up. I use to ride all over the hills in my teens going from one mates place to anothers then to the local hang out and so on. Some of the roads I use to cycle back then are the roads I now lead hills rides through. I loved being on two wheels, that feeling of diving into a corner and flicking my bike from one side to another. Not to mention the freedom and feeling of being part of the world around me, something I never felt in a car.

Skip forward a few years. I had stopped cycling as much after high school and had started to think about getting back on a bike. A good friend and then later housemate had just got his license and was telling me about all these awesome rides he was going on that he found on some site called Perth Street Bikes. I started getting lessons while still at home with my parents and had to keep that a secret from them as I knew they would tear me in half if they found out. I bought a helmet that I had to hide in the back of my car for a bit. Then moved into a place with said mate and that's when my interest really turned up to 11. I had my license within 3-4 weeks of moving out.

It would have been around 1-2 months later before I decided to let them know because, hey whats the worst they could do, I was now living independently! I had bought some basic riding gear and a Hyosung gt250r (I was a newbie back then ok) and paid mum and dad a visit on it. Mum saw it and immediately said "Oh, what have you done!". After a little calming her down she admitted she knew this was going to happen, just not so soon. Dad didn't give anywhere near as much of a reaction but when not saving face infront of me was apparently pretty worried.

Other than my housemate no one I knew was into riding and despite how much I tried to convince my mates none were interested. That's when I started coming on PSB rides, socialising with people outside my age group, somewhat stepping outside of my comfort zone and was able to discard my shy teenage self.

To get back on topic and away from my ramblings and reminiscing, what made me decide to start motorcycling? I had been mesmerised by them growing up and they were something akin to a forbidden fruit. At the time of gaining independence I used my bike to explore my freedom and realise I can do what I damn well please... within reason.

On the farm we had a Honda postie bike, Yamaha farm bike and then a Suzuki.
A and a number of years later I got a Honda St 1300 because it had a shalf drive instead of a chain because I was sick of adjusting and oiling them then in December 2015 traded in for the VFR 1200f again shalf drive.

I always wanted to ride but various wives, girlfriends and mother were adamant I wasn't going to
bought a jetski to satisfy the need for speed but theres only so much of that one can take.

finally found myself single a couple of years ago and decided now was the time..bar none, the best thing I've ever done.

Yeah I had similar despite my father having had MC's since he was a young bloke, he hadn't minded me riding dirt bikes but given I had a few accidents on them and there being more idiots on the roads etc etc he didn't want me getting a MC licence

I ended up getting lessons and my licence without them knowing and it was only when I asked my old man for help buying a bike that he started to come around, didn't instil confidence when I locked the front coming over the front lawn a couple of days after getting it

    Similarly...
I was brought up on stories of 120mph on old tweaked BSAs with no headlights (because tuned motor revved too hard the dynamo kept blowing shit up) running from the cops down british country roads.

    Sounded like fun.

    edit:
maybe tweaked is an understatement. dad was also a mechanic, things were built/tuned to within (and beyond) an inch of their life. Used to rebuild the things as often as ride them.

Didn't get into road bikes until quite late due to work requirements, but was given my first dirt bike for 11th birthday An old Yamaha MX100
“Crashing is shit for you, shit for the bike, shit for the mechanics and shit for the set-up,” Checa told me a while back. “It’s a signal that you are heading in the wrong direction. You want to win but crashing is the opposite. It’s like being in France when you want to go to England and when you crash you go to Spain. That way you’ll never get to England!” -- Carlos Checa

    I have no idea why.
It was a compulsion from very young.
I worked for a hardware store bagging cement into smaller bags from the larger bags for about 3 years till I had enough money to by a second hand yz80 aged 12 .
    Been riding ever since.

Mate my age scored a brand new XR75 [ showing my age obviously ], as a prize for something.

After about 1 hr of him falling off every 10 seconds, his parents said "just no".

I begged/grovelled/promised the world and my old man bought it for me, around 1973 or 4 ? At that age I had just started to get an idea what "girls" were all about [ tingling in the groinal area on speaking to them ] and the girls thought I was cool cos I had a bike.

Never been without at least one bike since.
