    Aftermarket indicators

    I don't get it.

    I accidentally kneed the indicator on the Hypermotard and the rubber has perished so it snapped. Cleverly I used liquid nails and a hose clamp to repair but I figured it would happen again on either side. So I ordered both indicators from some dodgy Italian eBay store. Of course the postage was double what I expected (despite me asking for combined postage) and they have the wrong plug (despite me sending a photo of the correct plug).

    Anyway, they are labelled in some strange foreign way as anterior/posterior, left/right. But I can't see the difference. Why would they be different? Don't they just flip over?

    It may just be the angle of the photo but the mounting lug on the OEM indicator looks slightly offset from centre which would angle the lens up or down depending on side

    Something from when I was setting up my SXV a couple of years ago:
    (Hint: Notice how you can disconnect the wires inside the indicator, thus removing the need to remove the entire indicator from the bike. Just replace the broken rubber.)

    When I was converting this bike from track to street use I bought brand new Aprilia indicators and fitted them.

    When I finally took the bike in for a licencing inspection I was pissed off to find that on one of the rear indicators the rubber stalk had broken. This somehow happened with the bike not even being moved or touched in any way.

    Pulling the rear plastics apart bugs the hell out of me, so I wasnít looking forward to doing all that just to replace one indicator.

    But, I had a second look and then realised that I would be able to replace the indicator without having to remove the wiring.

    Although Iíve ordered a replacement pair of rear indicators, I found a spare one in a box of general parts tonight. The wiring had been cut off, but the rubber stalk that I need was still intact.

    I pulled the old indicator apart, disconnected the wires and removed the indicator.



    I removed the contents of the replacement indicator.



    It turned out that all I really needed was just the rubber stalk. This slides out of the plastic housing easily. What we really need is a supply of rubber stalks that donít break.



    I then fed the wires through the rubber stalk and into the housing.



    Once the wires were fed through I was ready to put the globe holder back in.



    The wires easily connect to the globe holder. This is what makes the whole job so easy.



    The globe holder slid back into the housing easily.



    Then I put the outside cover back on, and was finished. Replacing that broken rubber stalk only took a few minutes.

    Or, do a search on AliExpress.com for SXV Indicator. They come in versions with either a 22mm or 37mm stalk.

    Of course, itís only the rubber stalks that break, so a supply of just those would be even cheaper.

    This will also apply to other Aprilias, as well as various Triumphs, that use this indicator.

    Rubber stalk bits on my griso have all died and didn't make 10 years.

    Indicators sagging on broken rubber and wires.

    Gaffa tape crudely wrapped around broken stalks the solution.

    So making your own stalks is out of the question..?

    Doesn't have to be rubber.

    Turn out of poly bar...make 'em pretty with black paint of choice..machine in flex...or just keep it simple.

    Phildo's ideas always have substance. group buy....resell oversupply?

    You can buy a set of 4 of the indicator stalks that go on the Street Triple, from JCS for about 5 bucks. Not sure if they are identical to these ones above, but they certainly look like it

    Excellent idea Phildo, I want to replace the outer plastic because it's a bit faded. I would have ended up soldering wires. With your idea I won't even have to take the seat off! I had pulled the indicator apart to try and fix it and forgot all about the being connectors inside.

    There are some nice plug in ones available that use the olí stereo jack plug.
    Popular with our off roaders. Plug indicators in to ride to off road area. Unplug them and ride.
    No indicators to break when you Ďtestí Crash.

    The only thing I have noticed as to why the you can not just put any indicator in any position is they seen to have a small drain hole to allow any water that gets in to drain out...

    Left front can go on right rear, right front can go on left rear...

    If you want to reinforce them so they donít break the same way you need to sleeve them internally...

    I have done this using the thin rigid retic pipe...
