    Small business accounting software

Company I work for is probably not much longer for this world, so I'm reviving Tim the pool man, part time at first but hopefully will transition into full time.

Going about it a different way this time, setting it up properly and taking on board lessons learned from last time (and the 6 month stint running other peoples pool shops in Kalamunda and Floreat)

Getting setup and hoping to kick off in a couple of weeks.

So I'm looking for an accounting package. Very simple, only me (plus a casual in summer when I'm busy enough)

I used QuickBooks years ago for another business, worked pretty well but the new version seems a bit OTT for what I want/need... Last time I bought the box with disc, loaded it and off I went... now it seems they want you to download it and pay an annual fee, with all sorts of online shit I don't need (or want) I could virtually do it on a spreadsheet (perhaps I will...) Purchases, invoices, payments, tax, nothing complicated.

Any sole traders can give me any insight/ opinion would be welcomed

    Have a look into Xero.

Yeah you pay a monthly fee but all the new online systems connect straight to the bank websites and import your feeds.

No more data entry. Just allocation.

i've done book keeping for small business for a few years, and even my last company i worked for used MYOB for multi division, location reportings.
So MYOB would be my suggestion...
But looking at the new packages, they seem to be going the same way as Quickbooks with the yealy subscription instead.

Havent used Xero yet, so cant comment

Interesting, we've had MYOB for over 18 years as I had to get it when I was a subcontractor before changing to my current job and found it relatively easy to use for the basic stuff like quotes/invoices etc even for me who at the time thought Excel was a car Missus still uses it to do bookwork for a couple of companies and while I believe it has a gotten a little more complex, especially if you are running multiple versions for different companies it still works fine for her

subscription does have some good points, it removes the upfront cost of the software and turns it into a monthly sometimes 100% claimable expense ( like petrol, whack it on your 55 day credit card theres cashflow right there) and you usually get full phone or email support, all upgrades and some sort of cloud backup or platform. theres been big leaps forward in mobile payments too like paypal or mobile eftpos etc..

because getting paid these days is as bigger problem as finding the work in the first place.

the only thing with those subscription things is once you stop paying thats it game over player one so make sure you can get your all data out and backed up or exported to csv or xml or whatever so it can be imported into another product and you arent chained to them, and that your accountant can easily work with it or extract it. thats where myob might have the jump as its supported by a lot of accountants and book keepers.

(i sell software products by subscription or traditional version model although no not what you are after )
I cant help it if your perceptions don't match my reality

they changed to a monthly subscription ,cheap to start with then upped it to $100 a month, aand wanted access to my bank account ,yea right . ive blocked them doing the direct debit. i dont mind a flat yearly fee i can pay.

BOC gases have changed to that system too and keep wanting access to the bank account.

    fucking corporate fraud

    fuck off LOL

Just asked the missus and yes IF you want the latest tax tables and updates etc then you have to subscribe ala MS Office 365 but it will work fine without doing it and she too wouldn't subscribe monthly
Also one of the companies she does bookwork for uses MYOB and also doesn't subscribe and has no issues

We use simpro at work, have a look at it Tim. Can do all your quoting, orders and manage stock from it too. Its cloud based and quite powerful. My experience is with a medium sized business, it's definitely scalable but you'll need to see how it fits as a sole trader.

Thanks for all the advice, had a session with a bookkeeping company in Joondalup and they offer a special deal on quickbooks with setup assistance and ongoing support, so I think I'll go with that.

^^ my missus uses QuickBooks at work (Business Manager), apparently quite straightforward. Let me know if you need some feedback from her and I'll set something up.
