    HTPC?

I was thinking about building a home theater PC (HTPC) out of old bits to have all the kids shows and movies on at hand for them

then i got sidetracked, would it just be easier or more versatile to use a HD, WDTV, AppleTV, NEtflix, Kodi, etc? we dont currently have smart tv's

its not like it would be a cinema experience, just home tv

    thoughts?

If the content is all to be locally stored then an old PC or laptop or NAS running Plex and Logitech K400 tends to work well.

Apple TV can also run the Plex App as a nice front-end (plus gives you all the other streaming apps) but you still need to host the local media server somewhere.

Probably easier to use these cheap android box nowadays with kodi on them.

Fun project though and can build a decent game/arcade machine throwing in a cheap gfx card.

I've got my old W7 computer with a 6TB Ext HD for movies and a 5TB for TV series plugged in and running Plex on the PC through my Telstra TV (Roku box) which works very well
I do have it running off ethernet though, I originally had it running Windows Media Center and via wireless but Plex was easier to use and the wireless was unreliable

I also have a small cheap Kodi box which I use to watch overseas TV shows sometimes
