    If the cost of the pit inspection is a consideration as to whether you commence a project build I'd say it's not a wise idea to start one as the cost of the pit inspection will be a pittance compared to what you'll likely sink into the bike.

    WSS.

    The cost of a pit inspection is nothing compared to that of a project bike, if it's not big ticket items like wheels, suspension or god forbid something inside the engine and gearbox. The hidden cost of all the small things add up so fast you end up wondering why and how you've ended up down this path.

    Even just sorting out a few little shits and bits on my ZX7R to get the thing decent has exceeded $500. $500 for just little shit that isn't factored in just to get things fitting together the way they should.

    Basic rule of thumb for a project bike is this:
    If you're starting with a good/running example you can easily double the purchase price by the time you are done.
    If your starting with a wreck you can easily triple or quadruple the purchase price, just to get thing in a running state.
    Neither example will be worth 1/2 of what you spent when you're finished.

    If you want a project bike that won't break the bank...

    Don't do it. If you're going to do a project make it something that's worth your while. I've worked on a Suzuki Across - it is definitely not worth your while.

    Agreed, the Across would be like restoring a Toyota Camry.

    You can make a 250cc bike interesting, take this VTR250;

    BUT, just to get those rims alone and to make them fit is a $3k exercise, on a $2000 bike.

    you do realise sone pretty catastrophic things can make a bike not start? cracked bores.. no compression... broken crank.

    or is this one of them "runs mint just needs $3 part from ebay to run" specials?

    As far as I can see these would be the only choice of project bike ( at the right price..? ) That you would even consider. Under $5k on the road.

    Nah, just needs some fuel and/or a new battery is all.

    Old British bikes...I intend, read hope to do an old britsh bike up in a couple of years...once all the crap we are currently doing is finished. A 350 30's BSA would be my choice...simply for spares availability...although a Douglas dragonfly would be my preferred bike...anyway think of a figure triple it and add twenty percent and a contingency fund of half again..
