Wheel restoration - rechroming or powder coating?

I'm about to resurrect my old R-Series Beemer, complete with wire wheels with steel rims.

I've already had them rechromed once, but they've now look utterly shithouse because they've rusted to buggery, which is the main reason that people stopped using chrome on vehicles.

First step is to strip the wheels back to the rim - does anyone know a bike shop that can remove the tyres and despoke the wheels (and respoke them afterwards)?

Once I do that I've got a few options:

    1. Have them rechromed. I'm a little reluctant to do this as they'll only rust again.

    2. Have them rechromed and then clear powder coat over the top to protect it. Not sure if this is technically feasible.

    3. Powdercoat them. The question with this is, how close can I go with powdercoating to create the chromed look. I'm thinking maybe a light grey with a gloss finish might look ok.

But before I do any of that of course, the chrome and rust must be removed, I'm guessing by sandblasting. I'm hoping there's a one-stop shop somewhere that can do the blasting and then coating.

    Any ideas?

My advice would be to toss the steal rims and get some alloy ones...if money is tight try the wreckers...

Fuck off. Why do you think I've got steel rims? This isn't a lightweight bloody pocket rocket - it's a long range tourer. One feature of this bike that no modern bike can match is that it's built like a brick shithouse, so if run over a brick or take the bike down a corrugated dirt road in the middle of nowhere it'll survive. The alloy mag wheels that came on this model were made of fucking plasticine. I once ran over a single brick on the way into a rally and buckled both wheels. Alloy spoked rims are available (used on the GS series) which are better than the mags but they still aren't as strong as steel.

If your rims are rusted it's almost certain that your spokes are going to be fucked as well. Rechroming and then a clear two pack over the top will last fine. Any decent bike shop can strip and build the wheels, i don't know where to get the chrome work done but they will strip the old plating and rust as part of their service. Vintage car guys will know who's "the man" for the plating

The spokes are fine - they're stainless. A bit of hunting around has come up with K&D chromeplating in Maddington as the bloke to go to. Apparently he's into bikes so he should know what he's doing

Yes Kerry is into bikes, I used to live down the road from him years ago. He does know what he is doing.
The only thing wrong with a perfect ride to work is that you end up at work.

If this is the bloke that used to operate from Midvale years ago, yeah, he's really good. Wasn't expensive back then either.

Yeah Budgie is in Embleton now. I took them up to him yesterday. And I've decided to go with chrome powder coating - from what I can see it looks pretty good, and is cheaper and longer lasting than chrome. But I'll have a talk to that bloke in Canning Vale - thanks for the tip.
