    Xr650r

Iím trying to sell an XR650R for a mate. Itís got NT rego on it. But the bloody thing doesnít have an ignition switch - just the kill switch. Is that standard on that model, and if it is can I get it registered in WA like that?

    Yes.

It's a kickstart bike. Not all bikes have electric start.

Thanks. I thought that might be the case. It took me a while to work out how to get the fucking thing started myself. Canít wait to see the inspector at the DOT have a go.

Try starting it in the middle of the desert exhausted from falling off and riding all day

Fuck that. I just pulled my calf muscle trying to get the cunt going in my driveway. After getting suited up for a ride I tried to start the bastard. Couldnít start it so I took my gear off to have a better go at it. Finally worked out the Tdc thing and got the cunt started. But idle speed was too low so the bastard stopped. Tried to get it going again and pulled a fucking muscle in my calf. I used to have a Ducati 860gt years ago that only had kickstart and it was easier to start than this bastard

As with most cunts there is a certain finesse to get them started.

Yeah I know. I could start my duke first time every time. Itís just a matter of getting the knack of it. Itís not helped by the height of the bike and the fact that Iím a short arse. The Ducati kick starter had the best design Iíve ever seen. It was designed so that you couldnít use it whilst on the bike. You had to be standing to the side of it. Iím going to get one of those bike stands that go under the sump so itíll at least be level when started from cold

I had an xr600r and I would always get it started before I got geared up. Get (have the choke on) it to tdc and use your whole body weight on the Kickstarter so basically you jump on it if it fires and dies turn the choke off and the give it another kick if it starts with choke on let run with it on so it donít die. I found this way a lot easier then just using my leg. Having said that Iím pretty sure you can get a electric starter kit for them.

Thanks for the info. One thing that some blokes seem to do is turn the motor over a few times with the decomp lever in to fill the cylinder with fuel mixture. But I know what you mean about the choke. Iíve got a hp water cleaner. It usually starts first time with the choke. If it starts and then dies itís a bastard to get going again. Iíve had a look at the electric start kit. It looks like a pretty major job

Nudge it past the second lump with the decompressor.

If it's jetted properly should only need 2 solid kicks.

Back when I was ~20 I had an 1983 CR250R like below and as you can see it had a left hand kick starter and it was also a bitch to start unless you were off the bike Occasionally if I'd been riding for a while and stopped and went to start it again it would fire but if it didn't fire 1st time you were fucked

Hmmmm the only thing dc on that bike are the indicators and maybe the stop light.

There is a regulator under the seat. Then a rectifryer mounted behind the headlight with a medium sized capacitor attached to it.

The bike in general is really short on power. When the indictators flash the front and rear alternate.

This is all assuming it hasn't been butchered.

Yeah Iíve had a look online and it looks like it has been butchered. I reckon Iíll just drop it into Dale Britton and get it brought back to standard. Iím going to have to do that anyway to get it registered. Unles you can recommend another workshop. Never owned a Honda before so I donít know who to take it to

Took it out for a serious spin today. Fuck me itís a weapon. I can see why guys love these things. Only thumper Iíve ever had before was an XT600 and this thing has a shitload more power. Power wheelies in 2nd are a piece of piss but Iím still not very good at it. Are there any dirt bike clubs around that I could get involved in?
