I went to aldi the other day and wasn't paying much attention and bought some pickled gerkin strips for my delicious burger I had planned

got home, read the label, Product of india. Do I really want to be consuming something grown, picked and prepared in a factory in india?

got me thinking about how lazy I've become when shopping - its one of my new year resolutions

One of the biggest problems is people want to eat certain fruit and vegetables that arenít in season. If itís not in season, itís probably been brought in from OS.

If itís been ďprocessedĒ ( tinned, frozen, bottled) thesres a high chance itís been done overseas - Australiaís manufacturing sector is pretty much non existent as is food processing. Always blamed on the unions which have also been pretty much non existent or ineffective since the 70ís but in reality is just done to get big prifts.

If you want decent Australian made/grown, buy fresh, buy it from a proper farmers market (I use Gilbertís in Midland) and youíll find youíre not paying much extra at all for fruit & veg that lasts longer than a day in your fridge. Farmers markets are pretty good at showing where their stuff is sourced so you can avoid overseas produce if you want.
There is no better sight than a group of cruisers riding down the highway.

Occasionally produce contaminated with pesticide residues end up at farmers markets to bypass inspection and testing.

I've been pondering this, and want to know if anyone has any good China connections.

As a white guy I could walk into the shops and without suspicion buy the shop out through multiple trips and sell the product at an inflated price overseas.

I mean, I'm only harming Australian kids, it's not like they have a future anyway.

Yeah I may have missed the boat to maximise profits, I don't have the contacts to shift the product.

Short of filling up a room in my house and selling it local, but I figure the margins would be too narrow.

I suggested it to the missus and she wasn't impressed.

The manufacturers must be slow learners. This has been going on long enough for them to have massively increased production and captured a lucrative export market, while still satisfying local demand...

Seems so obvious I must be missing something?

We bought from Farmers Markets on our around Australia Lap this year where we could. It took me back to four years old and smelling my Grandfathers tomatoes he grew. It is funny how we have adapted to supermarket food with no smell and much reduced taste without realising what is missing.

Many people wouldn't even know how fruit and veg are supposed to taste, sad really

Pay more for Australian foods that are Australian grown and comply with all the health restrictions and regulations Government has imposed and they will continue to be provided unadulterated.
Except what has happened is that the 2 majors have such market share that they force the farmers to sell to them for a low price and then hike it way up to maximise their profits. Don't blame the consumers for this. but do blame consumers when a product from CHina costs $2 and local produce costs $3..and the cheaper option is chosen. Can't blame the farmers for selling OS to make higher margins but their will be a time when the middle class of CHina will be able to consume everything Australia can produce and they will have the money to pay for it. Meanwhile Australians can eat 5hit. This is why regulation should exist and why prime agricultural land should not be sold to OS interests.

Some kids still don't know eggs or milk don't magically appear in cartons.
A former prime minister didn't know what a raw onion looked like!

If you buy vegies from the two majors then junk food is cheaper...if you go to a market, even potato house, you can walk out with plenty of fruit and veg for bugger all and how hard or time consuming is it to produce a salad?

The potato house produce can be bad if its the pre-packaged stuff but I find the loose stock okay. Maybe you went there on a bad day?

One Indian brand sells pickled gerkins which are a polish food with the writing in polish...only when I saw the country of origin did I realise.

Also...I think its Mcain who have sold out and their frozen goods are from OS.

I checked a bio hazard bag the other day....Made in China!....I wonder if the bio hazard is within the plastic or what you put in the bag.

Au needs to rethink its manufacturing capacity...we make nothing here...must be the laughting stock of third world countries...dump the crap on our shores personally I think the politicians should be paid fuck all!

Its a little more complicated than many realise. They buy our stuff on the proviso we buy their stuff (and provide financial aid).

If we had kept house prices under control, manufacturing and primary industry in this country would still be normalised and we would all have local produce and be sitting on huge stock deposits of everything to export as required to keep the country laughing.

Instead everyone works like crazy to keep a roof over their heads, with 0 time or spare money. So we outsource everything for the fastest and cheapest solution to keep on ticking over.

In a few centuries when space, food and water are the new oil, we will become the new middle east is my guess. No middle class and wars will be fought over what we have (had).
